Oh yeah, Smith back as captain.

Here we go again.

Complaints about England's attack being too samey, after complaints last time that we werentvplaying Broad and Anderson. You can't win.

No Wood either so what England have is 4 right arm medium fast pacers. Arguably that would have been better suited to the gabba but in Adelaide on a dry pitch you need a spinner. I think the problem is considering the conditions that they have got it the wrong way round. And i dont think thats hindsight speaking either

And the damage it could do the Leach might be long lasting.

I guess people will see the scorecard and just dismiss this as another trash day for England, but it felt like England were desperately unlucky in the first part of the day. Anderson beat Warner's bat several times, Broad had lbw's overturned, and there was one over he sent down to Marnus where I think every single ball in the over beat a genuine attempt to play by wizzing past the edge. Broad particularly got a hint of swing, and seam off the pitch. Was a lot of risky leaving, generated a lot of hesitancy outside off.

Sometimes you dont get what you deserve, and thats how it felt for England early on. After that the pitch felt on the slow side, especially as the ball got softer, and the luck and patience the batsman banked in the early stages paid off.

Of course, Buttler giving the batter nine lives didnt help. The first drop I think is straightforward if he goes with his left hand alone, but he tries to take it with his right hand coming across to his left, which just feels like poor technique. And the second is flat out nonsense from a test level keeper.... I expect old men in village cricket to make those stick routinely. Made even more bizarre when you think he took an absolute stunner to get rid of Harris - as good as a catch you see from a keeper back because the ball is almost passed him when he snags it.

Day to Australia, but some small positives to take away for England

more drops from Buttlerfingers then?

I see England bowled 89 overs. The umpires must have kept them out there until midnight for them to do that, because 7 hours after they first took the field they had still only bowled 77 overs

as Arthur very astutely pointed out a few days ago, England always pick the team that they needed for the last test

On the small positive side, England bowled tightly and kept a lid on the run rate, so the game hasn't got away from them. Yet. Will need to be a good morning session and an excellent batting effort to get back into the game, but if it was 300-2 we'd probably already been resigned to defeat.

Fortune has definitely not favoured England when bowling at Warner, but credit to him, he's grafted really hard and done the job for his team. And you make your own luck - if England had held their catches and been bowling at fresh batsmen under lights, it could have been different.

One of my favourite Warner innings. He really grafted all day, had his usual spot of luck, but kept on task all day. I was disappointed that he didn't get his century - but nowhere as disappointed as he was.

And finally the breakthrough, but my word, if they need to create 4 chances for every wicket it's going to be a long day.

Well bowled Robinson. Can't believe it was reviewed, was as plumb as they come.

England's session, for once, but Smith still there, and as I pointed out last match, the last four wickets for Australia average over 30 in Australian conditions v England. 450+ still very much on.
