You can understand why the selectors want to see if Trott can make a come back, he averages the right side of 45 in Test cricket and 50 in ODIs. Before his form went south, he was one of the best first drops England have had in a very long time, Gower would be the first player you'd put in the same bracket and that was 20 odd years ago.

He's 34 in April. Time to move forward?

It's not just a fact that people are living longer - sportsmen and women are lasting longer. Look at the likes of Sanga and Mahela who have still performed in their twilight years. Age, whether young or old, should not be a defining factor in selection - ability, performance, fitness etc should be the prime considerations.

Well played Trotty - leave the dob on the application form blank.

Good point, and I remember how well Gooch batted in his late thirties. Trott though presents a risk. Is he still that good that we should go back to him?

I have argued that Trott is too old in the past, but I've slowly come round to accepting that if a player is good enough it doesn't matter if they are 34 or 18. By the standards of modern cricketers, Trott probably has two or three seasons in him at the top.

There are a fair few talented youngsters around at present, but, Trott is someone who has a proven track record of scoring runs for England.

Don't know ginger- are England that good they can afford to leave him out of the mix? Anyway, like so many aspects of life - it's a risk business.

Bell, Hales, Ali, Taylor, Ballance - and that's just choosing the top 3 in ODIs - all present a risk of some sort.

Well, if Trott starts the summer by scoring runs in the championship, then he'd be hard to ignore. He'll have to open though. Ballance, Root, and Bell, have performed well of late.

I'm not a betting man, but I'd be tempted to put a few quid on him being back in an England shirt before the end of the ashes series

Need two more to get a conversation going about how they had to bat in pitch darkness having to face 200mph bowlers with no helmets or padding...or a bat.
