With the "suspended" parts of the sentance if all of them are "good boys" they could all be back in 5 years.

Basically the minimum sentance for all

Pathetic decision.

I hope the ICC appeal

Five years is a long time for a professional cricketer, especially a pace bowler....

It's effectively ended the careers of Butt and Asif. When the bans end, they'll be too old to make a comeback.

Its also the minimum ban possible for match fixing under ICC rules.

Edward Mills Grace wrote:Some nice righteous indignation, but the problem is, if you give "life" bans (a phrase brought completely into disrepute by the Pakistan Cricket Board last year in any case) for spot fixing, what do you do when somebody actually does fix matches? What you're actually demanding if you say "any cheating = life ban" is that there is execution and there is "getting away with it" and no points in between. There is not a civilised justice system in the world that would accept that notion.

Instead we have bans for the two senior players that effectively ends their international careers in disgrace even if they undertake the anti-corruption programme, and for the teenager who has been corrupted in their presence, a lengthy ban with the possiblitiy of rehabilitation at the end. It's a damn sight more than a slap on the wrist, but at the same time, an outcome that avoids posturing, rhetoric and, again, righteous indignation. A punishment,in short, that fits the crime.

I'm not saying they should all get life bans. I don't think anyone should.

However They all got the mimimum, yes some will be "supervised" during their sentance but if they are all good little boys they could be back in 5 years involved in cricket, that doesn't have to be on a pitch, but as an agent, coach etc.

Butt also was found guilty of more charges than the rest, so why didn't he have a longer "unsuspended" portion of his sentance?

Also why no fines? These guys alledgedly took money but will get to keep it!

I'd have said 10 years would be perfectly reasonable.

Possibly a subject for a different thread, but is Asif the most stupid individual to have ever played international cricket?

Asif tested positive for nandrolone, and if he was a 100 metres sprinter, he would've received an automatic two-year ban. But, this being cricket, and the far-too-relaxed view of performance-enhancing-drugs in the sport, he and Akhtar were let off by the PCB, and the toothless ICC couldn't do anything, it seems. If that happened in athletics, then WADA would've taken it on themselves to ban Asif for two years, and would've issued a reprimand to Pakistan.

Another reason why the ICC needs to sign up to the whereabouts rule and drug-testing....

Call me stupid, but tell me this....

Why did Butt get 10 years(5 suspended), Asif 7 years(2 suspended) and Amir 5, with none suspended?

What the *modded* is the point of giving differing sentences with the suspended sentence, if they cant break the ICC Codes anymore because they will no longer be playing?

What codes could they break to enact the suspended sentences? Even if they smoke crack, do nothing but live on nadrolone and accept all kinds of bribes, they cant play cricket anyway, so it wont affect the ICC or its code.

Why such cryptic decisions. Surely this is unnecessarily adding ambiguity to the decision?

As for 5 years.... I guess the decision has been made purely to satisfy those who wanted a soft punishment, and those who wanted hard in equal measures.

My concern is, in essence this punishment will reflect least on Amir due to his age, yet they are all equally culpable.

Just as guess, SP

all equally culpable, so 5 years. Asif been a naughty boy before so add 2 years suspended. Butt was the captain so add 5 years suspended.

Perhaps????

They may have fallen into someone's trap. :stupid That's a separate issue.

Just because few cricketers from a cricket playing nation fix a match does it warrant to accuse the whole nation? Pakistan Spot Fixing?? :no

Nevertheless,I love cricket so I sincerely support for all good actions taken to preserve this wonderful game. :thumb

Taken literally, the article title could mean that, Bath. However, I doubt very much that many would make that inference.
