To put it bluntly, the list of away off spinners who did well post-WW2 in Australia as far as I am aware is, well, pretty much literally a blank page save for Jim Laker having a few good games. Saqlain Mushtaq did ok in the mid-90s, but ok in the context of what came and went before him... averaging high 30s isnt exactly match-winning stuff.
Murali, Ashwin, Swann, Harbi, Ajmal.... all range from very bad to catastrophically terrible.
The most direct comparison in recent times is Moeen Ali... who took 1 wicket per test over a whole series at over 100 runs a piece. And Moeen was a better bowler than Shoiab...
I expect the Aussies to end Bashir's test career by test 3
