It must be exciting for him to be there as he has never left the country before.

Was picked for the test squad but got ill during Covid, and was left at home

Ha... play 2 match test series against Ind, NZ, WI, Bangladesh, SL and Pakistan, over a 2 year period.... go straight to world test championship final, do not pass go, do not collect £200

no wonder nobody takes it seriously. They drew 1-1 with India in home conditions, lost both tests comprehensively away in NZ, narrowly clung on to scrape a win against Pak in home conditions, just about squeaked a series win away in the WIndies and thumped Bangladesh and SL.... easy when you know how

and the how, of course, is don't plunge head first into a 5 test battle with Australia, then immediately dash over to the sub con for a gruelling 5 test series against a rampant India, before settling things down with a couple of 3 test home series against WI and SL, and then jetting off back to the sub con for a 3 match doctored pitch series in Pak before hopping on a plane to New Zealand to round things off..... you'd have to be daft to do that

I'm frankly amazed, with such an unadventurous schedule, that SA managed to find a way to pick up any injuries along the way, so I'm guessing they all got crocked playing franchise cricket

Gerald Coetzee - Groin injury
Lungi Ngidi - Hip injury
Nandre Burger - Lower back
David Miller - Calf
Lizaad Williams - Knee
Wiaam Mulder - Finger
Keshav Maharaj - Groin

Lungi Ngidi gets injured very frequently. Next frequent injured is Gerald Coetzee and Nadre Burger.

Klaasen retired from international cricket at 33, the peak of his powers.

South Africa apparently didn't need him to win the World Test championships.

Lets hope this victory for SA yesterday has some impact on the attitude and commitment of the CSA to test cricket in the future. SA have always been a powerhouse of a test team, but in recent years 2 test series vs second rate powers and resting players for T20 games haven't been encouraging for the future. Let's hope this win encourages them to play more

maybe they'll decide that their cunning plan for world test domination is working admirably as it is and we'll see them in the final again in 2 years and a handful of tests (predominantly against minnows) time

after all.... why change a winning formula?

from this point onwards, whenever SA's commitment to test cricket is called into question, they'll lay their WTC trophy on the table and tell the naysayers to ssip off and mind their own business

Lack of options I think...no Maharaj assuming he's injured?

he's scheduled to play in the second test, but only the second test, so maybe it's a personal thing, or a contractual one. Either way it doesn't seem like he isn't fit. Find out in the next test, I suppose
