Game drifting England's way, but only takes one of Root and Brook to get out and the game shifts hugely.

Most of the wickets today to the new ball, so maybe batting easier now.

Lose Root tonight and it'll look a bit iffy.

Probably won't get the overs in, but 24.4 left. Could be over tonight

Matchwinning knock by Honest Joe. But not at a new-England strike rate.

Sri Lanka deserve credit for battling that one out all the way. Bit of a sense that they were mainly just keeping things tight and waiting for England bats to make a mistake rather than attacking them ; but on a pitch which really wasn't doing anything special once the ball aged a little you probably can't blame them for that tactic. Certainly wasn't the typical Bazball Era England fourth innings chase - and had Root or Smith had a brain fade things may have become quite nervy. Probably a good thing they got the job done in four days as I gather the Sunday forecast isn't great.

With that one under their belt , Sri Lanka might fancy their chances in the next match against an England team that looks a fair degree weaker in the absence of Stokes and Crawley. No Wood on Thursday either I guess so presumably Stone will get a run out (although he hasn't had a lot of fun against Durham this week !) Pope will be glad to have a win in his first try with the armband ; but might like to sharpen up his performance with the bat...

no fun and even less bowling as Notts stare down the barrel of an innings defeat

Averages 58 - though early days I guess...

Took wickets against Sri Lanka for the Lions. Tall , left arm , nippy apparently. Still seems a bit of a punt.

I remember from earlier this season that the lad is very highly regarded

didn't he just take a shed load of wickets for the lions against SL?
