I think I read somewhere that Leach won't be able to play in the second test, but would be available for the third. They may decide not to play a spinner at TB and rely on some overs from Honest Joe. That would certainly help to get an extra bat in. Is Harry Brook another number 5?

Athers reporting that it's up to the medics if Leach plays and they're liable to err on the side of caution. If so, I'd bring in Brook and rely on Root for the spin option.

All concussion protocols now are handed over to head trauma doctors, who have a duty to go through a graduated return to physical activity. Once a doctor says the symptoms have disappeared, the player then has to rest from all forms of physical activity for a period (1-2 days I think), after which they have several tests of increasing technicality/physicality to test their cognitive and physical recovery. The tests start very basic to ensure if a player still displays more difficult to identify symptoms, he isnt at risk from further injury.

So, to start its a light jog or some stretches, check the player has no balance issues. Then it goes to a longer jog to see if increase heart rate leads to problems. Then thinks like slow catching practice.... as each stage is passed the length and intensity increases, until the end stage, which would be a tough physical work out followed by bowling to a batsman in the nets, or receiving full paced deliveries.

Judging on other sports, especially the NFL (which I believe is where the ECB copied this system from), its usually a minimum of about 1 week recovery from the injury diagnosis to being passed fully fit. And that assumes the initial flagged issue was over cautious.

Patrick Mahomes for instance got a whack before an NFL playoff game recently, and was back playing the next week ... the hit he got up shaky and dizzy triggered the concussion protocol, but he had no concussion when assessed by a doctor. Still it took a week to go through the proof and get out the protocol.

Anyone actually diagnosed after the event is usually out a minimum of 2 weeks, judging on watching a lot of NFL.

Its highly unlikely he would play a part in the next games in this series.

Obviously it goes without saying that a doctor independent of the team controls the release of the player from his protocol. Lets just say in other heavy contact sports, before it switched to this system, team doctors were diagnosing miraculous levels of recovery... especially before crunch games. Having players pressured or deciding themselves they want to play, and the team needing their star player back, is acknowledged to have lead to many cases of players being put in deep safety trouble stepping out (in the NFL again.... one only has to look at the horrendous recent research into how multiple concussions basically dissolves your cognitive abilities to see its bad, a condition known as CTE) ....

The former Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler said recently for instance that he routinely ignored concussion injuries, and now he's retired he has problems with memory. Troy Aikman too said he took a bad head injury once in his rookie year, woke up in a hospital, and has no memory of basically the whole season after.

the AFL and NRL have a minimum 12 day and 11 day, respectively , stand down period after the concussion occurred. Minimum.

It's frightening when you recall the treatment of players in the past, particularly in football. A cold sponge on back of the neck, smelling salts and straight back on to head the ball again. No wonder there are so many ex- footballers with brain damaage.

When it happened to me in my rugby days (ironically in a non-contact training drill), it was totally the opposite, even 22-23 odd years ago. They took it very seriously, I got checked up on a few times after the event, and the club doctor/coach made sure I went nowhere near a field for a good amount of time, and and even longer before I got a full contact situation.

Maybe they had more experience with it that other sports? Or on a personal level, being rugby players. No idea.... just in my experience, the care I received was excellent.

Williamson out due to covid.

Could be a low scorer. And might shake up the old FL a bit...

Young must be wondering which grave he urinated on, because Anderson so far this series is bowling some balls at him that no one can expect to get bat on. Just has to hope like that last one, they do so much, they fly past the edge.

I'm getting my Bracewell's mixed up. I assumed this one was a slow bowler, but not so. It would appear that NZ are going with an all seam attack. I thought England might do the same, so we'll get the chance to see who's right

Five man pace attack!

Disaster for NZ with Kane missing out. Henry is a good addition though.
