we'd be 144-5 without the fricking umpires.

it was stupidly dark, with dark shadows around all the players. My understanding is that the floodlights are only supposed to be used to enhance the natural light. Once shadows appear then it tells the umpires that it's too dark to continue. If it's too dark, it's too dark, even if spinners are bowling. The ball that got Borthwick wasn't even a spin ball, he just fired it in fast off a 4 pace run up.

Seems as if I missed a pretty uneventful day Bizarre scores and that must have been some knock from Borthwick, the 24 from Young is probably one of the best oversees debutant innings given the chaos going on with the other batsmen on either side.

I've just realised that we came back on after the umpires took them off for bad light

just long enough for Essex to take the wicket of Ben Raine.

perhaps they found some extra flashlights, or something, to illuminate the pitch....... players standing close by with the lights on their phones so that Harmer could see all the way to the other end of the pitch

Northern Echo headline says Borthwick's century has given us control. Any kind of lead in a - so far - low scoring game is obviously useful but Essex - given their pedigree - are fairly strong favourites in my view. They'd need to be skittled out again.
