Glad to see the back of him before he did too much damage. He's the sort of player who can run amok, given half the chance

Borthwick gets a wicket :o

I'm guessing they had to take tea early for the weather. I don't know what that does to the over tally for the day. We were on minus 2 for the overs, so we may have to be careful that we don't throw away those 2 batting points we had to work so hard for

the worry is that there are still 9 overs to go before the final hour starts. If the final hour starts at 5 then we might end up losing all of our bonus points. It's hard to work out where the time has gone, because we aren't being deliberately slow

yesterday, the umpires were all over Mullaney about the over rate and play ended up going on until 7.15 to get all the overs in. We don't have that luxury because play can't go on past that final over. And it's difficult, in truth, because it takes ages to retrieve the ball that goes to the boundary.... time gets lost with the 12th man having to run on to the pitch every over passing jumpers back and forth because they can't be given to the umpire... time gets lost with hand sanitiser breaks every few overs. I hope this stuff gets taken into consideration. The umpires were really giving Mullaney a hard time yesterday

Looking at the scores around the country it seems like lots of teams are struggling to take wickets after the new ball loses its shine. A load of unusually high middle and lower order partnerships.

Yes, that's been the pattern for a few years now. Wasn't there a suggestion to use a ball with a more pronounced seam this season? Anyway, enough to suggest from this game that we'll at least be competitive this season. A sameness about all the bowlers but same can be said about most of our competitors.

Ben Raine was unusually toothless with the ball in this game. Lets hope it's just one of those things

Carse was typically expensive, without being particularly hostile

Salisbury kept plugging away. He went for a few, but had no luck in the slip cordon where he conceded boundary after boundary from genuine edges

Rushy was in a league of his own, without ever getting full reward for his efforts

Who makes way for Young... Jones or Poynter?

For all he's a waste of a batting slot, Poynter did well behind the stumps in this game. Not much got by him, even when Carse was spraying the ball down the leg side

Yes, he did well in that regard. I think though I'd be inclined to retain Jones while Young plays. May as well give him a few more chances - although top order batting is likely to be hazardous so they may well plump for Poynter's experience..
Young will do well to make runs in just a handful of games so perhaps they'll see not having Jones up top would be less risky. Although I suppose he could drop down the order and replace Poynter.

Young for Jones for certain. Which makes for a very solid 6.Carse bowls the occasional shorter but you can't afford someone going for 5+ runs an over. We can afford to go with 3 seamers providing Thomson can keep one end tight with Burnham doing the Harte role.

ECB directive.
On Saturday, April 17, all County Championship matches will pause between 2:50pm and 4:10pm to coincide with the funeral of HRH Prince Phillip, the Duke of Edinburgh.

The ECB are also asking all recreational clubs to stop play between 3-4pm on that day.

I wonder if they'll be making up the time over the rest of the match? Although I suppose 70 minutes out of a 4 day game wouldn't make much difference in most scenarios.
