I might be wrong, but wasnt it Stokes who put down a Windies player in exactly the same way last test? Coming across into another fielders zone trying to make a mega catch, when in reality its falling into first slips lap as a dolly? Someone who doesnt go with the established hero worship line on Ben might say hes trying to be the hero all the time at the determent to the team...

Stokes was done by an inswinging, out cutter that did him like a kipper (although him ending up about 8 yards out of his crease begs the question what was he doing coming down the pitch to a pace bowler)

I was reading about this......seemingly, Mo Abbas is known for being metronomically accurate when bowling a fuller length and he nibbles the ball about a bit, so the bulk of his dismissals at test level are lbw. The theory is, he loses a lot of his control when he is forced to bowl shorter lengths and isn't quick enough to put the batsman under any pressure, so taking a stance outside the crease is a tried and trusted tactic to negate his biggest weapon and his favoured form of dismissal. After that he can be flogged to all parts.... simple really

I suspect that the England camp probably forgot to tell Mo that he is supposed to start bowling medium paced long hops when a batsman stands a yard outside his crease.

The slightly ironic thing about this is that England deliberately weakened their batting in order to include 4 seamers so that Stokes doesn't have to bowl, but now look a spinner short (so Capt Root may well feel that he has to bowl), whilst Stokes was warming up his bowling arm during the interval in case he has to bowl anyway

So all a bit of a fuckup really, selection wise

He had a couple of bad tests on pitches that had nothing in, and I think people are looking for things that arent there. Batsman will come out of there crease on pitches with zero bounce or pace in, bring the ball on a bit quicker for playing shots and scoring quick. That pitch in Adelaide was terrible, and even Bavuma made a score in Cape Town, to give you an indication of how lifeless that must have been.

If Stokes or England came up with a plan like this based on these games, then ill leave the result as proof of its stupidity. Coming down the pitch when the ball is rising off a length, cutting and swinging is suicide.

If Stokes had taken a normal guard and stance, hed probably hav eblocked it
