Next England coach - place your bets

So now that Trevor Bayliss has marched off into the sunset with a World Cup, a T20 final and a disintegrated test team to his credit, to whom should England look next.

The next incumbent will need to turn around the rot in the test arena, where surely the Ashes in Australia in 21-22 will be the key target. Long term replacements for Broad and Anderson, finding some players able to cope with the demands of top-order batting in a test match setting, and dealing with the middle order pile up (how do you fit Stokes, Buttler, Bairstow, Foakes, Woakes, Pope, etc. all into the team when they all want to bat at 6 or 7? I know my answer, but it seems that it won't happen now matter how badly some of the incumbents play). All the while, there will be an expectation that the tremendous gains made in the white-ball arena need to be maintained?

So who would you pick? Or would it be more than one? Is it time for separate red and white ball coaches?

I personally have no idea. Collingwood has been suggested, but not sure if it is his time. Stewart seems to have done well as Surrey director of cricket, but would he want the role?

Not sure test cricket will be the immediate focus. I think they'll muddle along with this sort of white ball test team until the end of the T20 WC next year, so if we want to target the next ashes, then we'd better hope the T20 is early in the year.

The ECB don't have a clue what they are doing, so my guess is they'll look around world cricket until they identify the highest earning coach and buy him in. I've heard Kirsten's name mentioned... but all of these people are on the same merry go round, each taking turns with all the teams. Collingwood would be the bold move so that'll frighten the living daylights out of the ECB, but then they could also get him on the cheap, which would interest them greatly. He won the T20 WC as captain and that it's now back on the agenda again, might strengthen his case........ but ultimately some Sir Humphrey character behind the scenes saying "that's very brave" will scare them off and they'll go for the safe expensive option, whoever that is

If he fancies sticking his head above the parapet again, don't rule out Flower, btw

Good point about Collingwood and the t20 , Footman. He would be my pick anyway...but as you say , might be too "courageous" for the suits...

I'm not as pessimistic as BFL , by the way. Reckon the bowling is looking quite promising - provided injuries don't keep piling up too fast ; although I'm not convinced that Jack Leach (despite his wonderful character) has quite got the skills to fill the spin role long term. Will wait and see.
As for the batting I quite like Burns - though he will need to work on handling the short ball a bit better for tours down south. If he can find a partner (Denly I see more as a - useful - stopgap) then the batting will probably be OK. Plenty of middle order types so they can sort themselves out as they go.
Would be great to get a new KP or Bell but they don't grow on trees. Let us see how they all fare in NZ and SA.

Someone in the mould of Fletcher, Flower, Strauss who would be in charge and not let Root run the show. He doesn't seem to have much of a clue.

Bayliss took a back seat and it worked with Morgan,who is a strong captain and knew what he was doing with the team.
Seems Giles wants one person in charge of all three formats, names mentioned Ford, Gibson, Arthur, Kirsten, Stewart, and a couple of coaches for red ball and white ball.

So say Silverwood in charge of Tests, Thorpe/Collingwood for white ball. Is Silverwood strong enough? He is fairly new.

Silverwood has been around cricket as player and coach for a thousand years, and as far as I know has worked throughout those thousand years, so he probably has all the skills. MPV is a mouthpiece and promoter of players, who had his brief stint as capt and absolutely made the very best of it, before becoming a radio star, an unsociable media (whatever that is) junkie and a some time reality TV personality. I'm old enough to remember the carnage when Bumble became head coach.... start the car. Collingwood will certainly get the job at some stage imo

I mentioned Vaughan because throughout my life there's always been a divisive figure who the press have dug up to take charge of the whole shambles in times of need. Like Botham or Boycott or Illingworth. Vaughan is the modern version. But yes, they should pick a qualified coach.

I dont think Vaughan is that bad an idea simply because he has good ideas on the game, when he's trying not to be too much of a journalist looking for stories. I think personally its more important to bring in a guy that respects and treasures the test match game, and is able to communicate that to his team and get them playing like it means something; and someone who isnt afraid to ask his players stern questions. Under Bayliss too many players have been able to play get by playing under par.... that needs to end.

You would think that he wouldn't need to be encouraged. Feel Root will be in charge and Silverwood pretty much like Bayliss whereas Kirsten would take control. At least Silverwood would know about county cricketers when it came to selection meetings.

My concern with the appointment is our batting; picking a former bowler as a coach for me begs the question of what he can do to get us scoring more runs. Having said that, you look at his time at Essex, and he got guys like Browne and Lawrence into test match contention and batting well. Ill give him a chance and see how he goes.

I was hoping for Kirsten.

He was the natural fit when you think of how much plaudits he's got as a coach from his players, who says he had very positive impacts on peoples batting technique and motivation. Especially seems to have been praised working with youngsters too.

But in the counter, didnt he quit both his international jobs very quickly, citing the fact he wanted to retire and be with family? You ideally want a coach to bridge WC gaps and the 4 year test calendar turn around, so it would be a big hazard to hire someone who walks away from jobs quickly.

He looks a lot less like Hugh Grant than he used to.

Good luck to him. He did well at Essex and he's not an establishment figure and he's not Andy Flower (or Peter Moores) again. He'll know the county game (unlike Bayliss). He's taking over a pretty moribund England Test team, and he'll struggle to match Bayliss in limited overs. Tough job.
