He might have been told to back his instincts, but I doubt that translates to trying to wallop everything. At the moment he looks like a player who has almost zero technique to the moving ball, which makes him a risk to getting out to simple channel line and lengths, but also he counters that by taking risk shots on when the ball isn't that short, wide or full....so unless it's a buffet ball, he's a wicket waiting to happen on a lot of balls.

He can be beaten on both edges. Shown a massive weaknesses v Ireland to the ball moving in, and was bowled through a canyon gap between bat and ball. Very ropey defending outside off. Unless he gets some massive levels of luck he won't be around by test 5

England won't like seeing Lyon turn his first ball prodigiously

In fact Lyon might be the key here. He's getting some real grip from the pitch. Going to be a danger, England need to work a few singles and not allow him to build pressure with them stuck on the crease. Get a good stride in or use your feet

Chalk another umpire mistake up...how did he not give that, it looked all kinds of gone. And why did Australia not review again? It's about the fourth time they've not reviewed when they'd have benefitted

Yep. Judging on this by day 4 Lyons going to be turning it at right angles. The odd ball is turning sharply early on day 2, by the 4innings this will be a death trap.

Been less seam and swing, but indications of uneven bounce creeping in too. Could be a good toss to have won

Root edges just short. Australia are bowling well, but so far it's not going for them

True. I can mention three England players who have got off with it in the last year, before that it was a real rarity. Did they change the weight or size of then recently? For me I'd change the rules, if it hits the woodwork then who cares, it should be out.

Session comes to an end. Australia have been unlucky not to add root to their wicket column, but Burns so far is looking very assured. Couple of times he's been beaten by a ball going crazy off the pitch, but other than that he's punished bad balls with his blade, and blocked the good ones.

Great session of proper test cricket.match is shaping up very nicely

Clearly Australia need to learn how to use the review system much better. Taking 15 wickets every innings whilst only allowing the opposition to take 8 is going to cost them severely.

They are getting it horribly wrong, is it something they are not working on off the pitch?
