Time to move him down the order, and out of the slips. I appreciate we have no Dawson in this game to field there, but we still have Ervine, Vince and Jimmy. No idea if Holland can field there, but surely can't be much worse.

He's a lucky boy Rilee that none of the other batters are knocking the door down. Hopefully he can use the t20s to spring back into life. (Which unfortunately I don't see happening with McManus. His batting and keeping are now becoming an issue, including his four day batting. He does have youth on side though at least; Rilee should be hitting his prime now)

Assuming no utterly amazing final session (I imagine that part-timers will come on after about half an hour), I calculate that we'll move 20 points behind Essex, one point behind Lancs and 44 points clear of the relegation zone. Having played one game more.

Between now and the bumper four game September, we just have a home match against Lancs in early August. Win that, and we'll surely go into that bumper September full of confidence. Even more so if we do well again in the t20s.

Are you expecting Will Smith to play in the T20s? Don't know when his contract expires but presumably it won't be renewed!

Highly doubt it. A year ago he was almost the first name on the t20 teamsheet. But sides finally started to get after his bowling last season - and his batting has never really been good enough to play above 7 or 8 in our t20 team.

But we are without Dawson due to test duty. Smith would be somewhat of a like-for-like replacement for him, but my suspicion is that Holland, Berg or Crane will play instead of Dawson. (None of whom would be ideal, Crane in particular, as we would be massively lacking in front line batters)

Assuming this game is now filtering to a draw what do we expect tomorrow's t20 xi to be? Without Dawson gone you'd assume Afridi would be the 5th bowler/all rounder with Ervine as the 6th option if needed?

I'm sure Afridi would have been one of the five bowlers with or without Dawson.

I would replace Dawson with Holland. I think they will replace him with Crane.

Someone, Rilee, Vince, Ervine, Bailey, Afridi, McManus, Abbott, Wood/Berg, Crane, Topley is what I'm expecting. Not sure about Wood's fitness, so Berg as a caveat in case he is not fit enough. And "someone" could be Carberry, Adams or Alsop. I've got no idea who they'll pick. And I'm not sure I care (if Carberry was on form, I would care).

Thanks. I suspect he will probably retire when his contract is up, could still do a job for Durham imo but that ship has probably sailed!

Well Smith does make the squad for tomorrow. But it is a 15 man squad! There's hardly anyone who hasn't made it!

Vince, Carberry, Ervine, Bailey, Smith, Rilee, McManus, Afridi, Berg, Abbott, Wood, Topley, Wheal, Crane, Fidel

Slightly surprised that Holland doesn't make it, so that too increases Smith's chances. But as I say, I can easily see Berg or Crane being picked as Dawson's replacement instead.

I know he's on awful form, but I am glad to see Carberry being given a chance. If he doesn't get any runs tomorrow or Sunday, then fine follow suit from the one-day cup and remove him. But at least we've given him a chance. An on form Carberry is one of the best t20 openers in the country.

Just looking at what the guys did yesterday, in the two t20 warm-up matches vs Somerset (who included Trego, Abell, Bess and van Meekeren).

First up we restricted them to just 122-5. Afridi 0-20 off 4. Topley 2-22 off 4. Wood 0-21 off 4. Smith and Wheal didn't play. We chased it down with 7 wickets and almost 4 overs left. Carberry made 6 off 8. Afridi made 11 off 10. (Most of the work was done by Alsop, despite not being selected for tomorrow - a rather slow 42* off 43 - and our reserve wicket-keeper Dickinson - a much quicker 57 off 28)

In the second match we made 144-9. Carberry made 13 off 10. Smith 16 off 16. Wood 14 off 18. Afridi didn't play. (Single figure scores that time from Alsop and Dickinson). We restricted them even more this time, to 119 all out. Wood 0-23 off 3. Topley 2-15 off 3. Wheal 2-21 off 4. Smith didn't bowl. (With bat and ball, Taylor looks like the stand out player from this match)

So basically tidy stuff from the seamers, but nothing else to shout about.

I wish you wouldn't keep on giving money to the ball-biter

No Wood in the XI. Berg and Crane both play. Scorecard has Berg at 6, which if correct means that he is the direct replacement for Dawson. As I've highlighted before, we never particularly like shuffling the batting order when we're without someone.

So puts pressure on Berg, yes (if he does bat there), but I'm happy to see McManus kept down at no.8.

Can't remember a t20 game like this.

0-52 off 3 overs

4-18 off the next 7.
