Ouch. That's gotta hurt. Still, it took a fine partnership at the end to get the win for Hants. The positives for Yorks are the runs for Ballance and wickets for Coad. Really lost their way in the third innings though.

Disappointed, but not all that surprising when runs became easier to score in the early afternoon session and Yorkshire's bowling attack lacking pace. Anyone of Brooks/Plunkett/Sidebottom/Willey/Fisher would have made a difference not just with the bat, but also adding some lower order runs.

Captain Ballance missed a trick* in bringing back on Bresnan and Coad with 4 overs to go before Hampshire took the extra 30 minutes, because at that point only singles were scored. I understood why Patterson came onto bowl when he did so he can plug the streaky shots past gully region, but the scoring of Berg and Angles was predictable in turning the ball around backward square leg for singles.

*Edit - Bresnan limped off during his recent bowling spell, so a bit too harsh at the time of writing.

2 dropped chances and silly little misfields towards the end did not help Yorkshire's cause, but a different make up against Warwickshire over the Easter Weekend where the Bears pace bowlers are not as quick as Abbott and Fidel.

Warwickshire are not only facing certain defeat today but will leave London with only a single bonus point which must be an all time record low.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Essex have got something to play for today though. Eight wickets in the bank and a pitch where runs have been scored.

Trott goes to Footitt (perhaps a little appropriately). Close to seven hour innings. One to go. Five runs to make Surrey bat again.

Good knock from the South African born batter.

we have moved onto 137-2, if we can get to lunch without having lost a wicket this morning, will be a huge boost

Those two quick wickets might open the door for Lancashire but I wonder why they batted on so long in their second innings? Perhaps just taking a safety first approach for the opening game.

Well done Essex, fantastic effort to pull off the draw.

I did feel Lancs delayed the declaration too long.
