Cook had the same issue yesterday when they were trying a tactic to bowl straight at Vijay and pujara with catchers on the leg side.
Vijay and pujara just stopped playing the shot and saw the period off.
Cook needs to give the batsman a reason to play the shot, either by allowing a boundary option or like you say keeping a slip to allow the bowler to vary the line a bit.
