I once seen Hoppo slaughter Stuart Clark around Hove a few years back in a year where he literally couldnt hold a bat in the county championship. In fact he could barely hold a bat through his career, but Hilfenhaus and Clark jogged in at half pace and bowled what essentially felt like a slow pace net session as Hoppo tucked in for a feast. It was neither intense or worthwhile cricket.

Westley has scored 4 hundreds this year, but its worth noting two of those are in friendly matches. The game against Cambridge had 4 Essex centurions, so gives you a clue as to the quality of team they were playing. Similarly, the Worcs game had I believe 5 centurions, so probably a road they were playing on.

14 hundreds in an unassuming career, apparently we have one against SL (friendly), one against Australia (friendly), one against Cambridge (friendly) and according to Cricket Archive, he has scored two in first class registered games with the MCC (friendly) So in short, 9 hundreds in proper matches in a 9 year FC career. Playing at a lower level of cricket virtually all his career. His only journey into Division 1 he got battered routinely. Middling average that is inferior to many players, and the worst record in his full strength county line up.

The suggestion he gets picked for the test team is the most absurd pick since the dark days of "Are you English? Do you play for Surrey" style rubbish from the mid 90's.

But wait.... he must be good, after all his batting partner and mate is England Captain. Obviously has nothing to do with this insane promotion.

I just dont think his record can be defended. He hasnt been a standout player for anything other than 3 county matches in a 9 year career, I just dont understand it. The long term record in Division Two cant lie. He has either struggle technically at times, or had the wrong attitude not to be better for so much longer. Both conclusions leave a strong case for his non exclusion.

James Taylor averaged 50 in Division Two while very young and was told it meant nothing until he did it in division one. He averaged 60 for the Lions and it didnt mean anything. He averaged 42 in Division one and was told he didnt score enough big innings He played 7 tests in about 8 first class seasons.

Westley plays 3 games in Division two after being average for year after year, and he suddenly becomes a test pick?

Reminds me of when Shane Warne was asked by Border to bowl a few loose deliveries in a match against Worcestershire, in 1993. Hick scored a few, and most probably thought he was in for easy pickings, that was until the tests started.

To be honest if we're going to make changes at the top, we might as well pick a player whose in form. Personally I'd like to see Vince come into the side at 5 and give the troublesome twosome the summer.

If England are determined to make a change at the top then I'd rather we were bold and pick left field, Westley or Bell-Drummond would be more interesting than going back to the likes of Robson.

Sam Robson has scored nearly 500 runs in 4 matches, and currently averages just under a 100 with 3 x 100's.... in Division 1.... and scored hundreds against the widely touted best team in the current competition.

I did deal with the reason I am not endorsing Robson above.
