Probably fair to say Bresnan hasn't stood out with the ball as much as you'd expect a returning international, but he's strengthened the batting.

Highest 1st innings score at CLS in the Championship is 339 (Durham v Sussex back in April). Durham's success has come from dismissing the opposition for less than 200 in the 2nd innings and/or pulling off a high 4th innings run chase. Crease occuption is vital for Yorkshire in order to avoid defeat, even with a near strength bowling line up that has won games for the White Rose in 3 days.

Bresnan's bowling average not necessarily the best (22 wickets @ 31) but bizzarely has scored 9 runs less than Alex Lees and 120 runs more than Will Rhodes.

Yes occupation of the crease on the 1st morning is critical at Durham-the discipline shown by the young openers was commendable an potentially match winning-certainly can't see Yorkshire losing from here. The pitch usually flattens in the 4th inmings under the heavy roller. There mightn't however be a 4th innings.

Feels like they think the Durham pitch is going to deteriorate, but I get the impression it gets better. All Durham can do from here is bat the game out. Still, a draw would be a decent result for Yorks.

When it rains, it frigging pours..... I think the pitch has draw all over it though, Sussex have gone in with two spinners and finally remembered they own Zaidi. It must be a flat and dead track.

Kind of incredible though that Zaidi has been playing in the second team all year when our batting has been listless (he has 11 FC centuries) and we haven't had a spinner. A batsman averaging 37 with the bat, and 80 wickets at 28 with the ball would surely get into most teams anyway.

A team with all its top 6 averaging below 25, with no established spinner and 7 injured bowlers waited only 9 matches to give him a try. I simply cant believe that.

Reckon Gale timed his declaration so Sidebottom and Brooks can make use of the new ball with two spells of bowling either side of tea. But it's Steve Patterson who is making the early in-roads.

Yorkshire having six frontline bowlers in the line up is helpful in this situation, even Leaning and Finch can turn their arm over if necessary.

Suppose some Durham resistance is to be expected along the line, but what a brilliant day for Yorkshire. Record breaking 7th wicket partnership in County Cricket between Bairstow and Bresnan, bagging five Durham wickets before stumps an added bonus.

Still a lot to do before the thoughts of winning can be contemplated.
