Rory Burns, the Surrey opener, his brother was one of my college teachers a few years ago, and he said too me that Roy wasn't too popular due to having a poor attitude and being arrogant.

That was 3-4 years ago, so presumably ( and hopefully ) he has changed.

Having Pietersen around should teach him a bit of humility!

With Gareth Batty as captain.

(Actually, I don't think he is this season. Think it's Wilson)

Yes Surrey does seem to attract a few unsavoury characters.

Yes, the third is almost out of reach barring a collapse.

And likewise barring a collapse, Surrey are too close to a 5th batting point for us to be able to stop them.

No doubt that Surrey have the upper hand, but I'd be disappointed if we lost from here. Especially against their bowling attack.

If I was in their shoes, I would want to be setting a follow-on target of 320 - 350. Given that the only way they win this (surely!) is by enforcing the follow-on, setting a target of say 270 is maybe slightly too much of a risk - even though time is very much against them.

At the moment it's about 230, so another 100ish runs. If Roy can stay in, Surrey should easily be able to score them all before lunch tomorrow and maybe have a little 5 - 10 over dart at us with the ball before the break.

But regardless of whether or not we then avoided the follow-on, you're still asking us to lose 20 wickets in a maximum of 5 and a bit sessions. Even though we are a batsman light, I'd be pretty disappointed if we did that against this bowling attack.

Not pretty of course. But like the Worcs match, not losing these matches is generally more important than winning them. Especially given that we already hold the advantage in the league (both in terms of points, and games played), and that there is enough cannon fodder lower down in this league for us to get wins against later in the season.

I imagine that Surrey will declare as soon as they hit 400.

Disappointing day but all teams get them. If we were to lose 20 wickets in about 5 sessions(weather forecast is pretty good) then I would have to question if we could stay up if promoted. I was at Taunton today - an hour lost at the start but some interesting play including the return of Butler.

Hopefully we can pick up a second bowling point this morning and then when Surrey declare we can get to 350 in under 110 overs with some steady batting. That will give us a ton and a half of points after 10 games and still sitting pretty. I guess easier said than done.

They have scored 14 runs off the last 10 overs, doing us a favor.
