I don't think there's too much wrong with this squad. Easy to say in hindsight but lots had Spain as title contenders again. VDB picking his favourites is definitely a factor though and could also be a reason if Brazil go out early as Big Phil does the same.

Anybody who watched Spain get hammered 3-0 by Brazil in the Confed final last year could not seriously have Spain as title contenders again....
