I think that that is a fair assessment but I think if that caliber of player was not going to be got then a rethink may have been necessary. Jackson Bird would have been good but after that it seemed to be people of less and less stature.

I think, and Mike may correct me as our resident athletics expert, that Michael Johnson was the oldest person to win any Olympic event in its history under the long distance runs, and he was only 31 or 32 ish at the time, and that was for a relay where he ended up returning his medal after two of the sprinters admitted to taking drugs on his team.

Usain bolt was the only person to retain a 100m or 200m medal I think also, so the shelf life of sprinters at the very top level is not long at all.

Could you imagine Blake running towards the crease?? I certainly as a batsman wouldn't want to get anywhere near it.

I would have thought Christie and lewis were getting on a bit when winning golds. Maybe it's different without steroids. Pace bowlers are usually losing their velocity by the time they get to 32. Maybe as likely as Freddie playing for lancs?

Christie was 32
Johnson was 32, but older
Carl Lewis was 31 when he won his last sprint medal (35 when he won the long jump)

He even said that he could make the England team right now.

He has turned out for the Kingston Cricket Club, which produced the likes of Jeffrey Dujon and Jimmy Adams. He used to be a pace bowler at his school, when the principal saw how fast he was running in to bowl, and drafted him on to the athletics team.

"During the track-and-field off season, the Beast can be found performing as a demon bowler on Sundays for Kingston Cricket Club. In one match earlier this year, he took four wickets for 10 runs. It is the sporting personal best in which he takes the greatest pride."

YB: James Anderson (English cricketer) to teach me the art of swing bowling.


What is your favourite meal?

YB: Curried chicken back with boiled dumplings and ackee.

When and how did your passion for cricket start?

YB: My passion for cricket, I think, is something I was born with.


What standard did you reach and what was your best performance?

YB: I played semi-professional club cricket in Jamaica. My best performance was in a Twenty20 match where I was bowling. The opposition needed nine runs with two wickets left and I grabbed both wickets. It was extremely satisfying.

Shame that he will NEVER be allowed to play for Yorkshire, with the overseas rules meaning you must play International cricket.
