I'm not sure it should be automatic for a non centrally contracted player like Ballance to miss the coming county match when the ODI is two days later.

I agree & (although it might well help Durham) wouldn't it also have made more sense for Root to play in the CC rather than be taken away after just 1 game?

That's true. I suppose centrally contracted players are withdrawn with a view to the whole workload of the summer. And the ECB pay their wages, so it's difficult to dissent from whatever the ECB think is best for them. Really, all the players could play in the CC and play this stand alone ODI. Unless it's that Moores wants to meet the players.

I'm fairly sure all players would have been available for this round of matches were it not for the disastrous winter. Under normal circumstances this ODI would be regarded ( by England) as a fairly low key affair but with the second coming of Moores it's taken on greater significance. He wants to meet the players and be seen to be doing something. Could be a tricky game-Scotland are a dangerous side and all the pressure is on England.

I remember reading that one of the reasons Steve McLaren failed as England boss was that the players hadn't a clue what he was talking about half the time. He talked almost exclusively in coach-speak, so for example, when discussing set pieces, McLaren would talk about PMO's all the time. positions of maximum opportunity, when all he really had to do was tell someone to get on the back stick for the header.

PM sounds like a PMO person to me.

Which helps explain why we struggle as sporting nation.

If Felipão tells the Brasil squad about "zonas de oportunidades" you can bet they will know exactly what he's talking about.

Tim Bresnan's first outing today, good luck to him.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

He's their overseas player. Signed a deal to play 2 games for them ahead of the England series.

Get's capped for 2 games not bad. I heard last week that one player, I think Luke Fletcher, has been waiting 3-4 years and is still waiting.

Surrey play out 5 consecutive maidens.

Graeme Smith has only played 163 FC games, 117 of which are tests.

So we're preparing the opposition for the test series by lining up 4 day cricket in English conditions for one of their best batsmen, whilst sending Cook, Bell, Ali, Root and Ballance (at least 3 of which are likely to be in our test side) off to play Scotland in an ODI.

Doesn't strike me as the best of ideas from the new coach!
