Would love to see England play 5 frontline batsmen, Steven Davies, Scott Borthwick or Adil Rashid at 7, Chris Woakes or Tim Bresnan at 8 or vice versa, Stuart Broad, Jimmy Anderson and A.N.Other bowler.

I'm thinking Stokes' injury represents an opening for Chris Woakes.

Out for six weeks so he misses the first month of the season. Should be back for the Test series. But if him and Root don't make it, we will be looking at top six of Cook, Robson, Bell, Taylor, Ballance and Woakes. Possibly.

That looks likely. Or Carberry opening. Someone must have looked at that and come to the conclusion that we should sack Pietersen.

There's a chance there were other reasons for Pietersen's sacking.

Stokes' self-harming may have also harmed his career if his replacement does well.

Why face palm ? Who else anyway .... They are only there as injury cover surely ? If Kieswetter were to play he would probably have as much chance as Wright of bringing off a one-off fast scoring fifty.

To be honest I don't give England much chance in this . But if they are to do well it needs the openers plus Morgan and Buttler to really fire and some bowling combination to surprise us ; and neither the injured pair or the replacements are really relevant...

At least CK is an experienced player. I'm less convinced by throwing in unknown quantities. Kieswetter could challenge for a place, but I'm not getting the impression that Woakes and Bell will. Patel would have. Another front line spinner in case Parry struggles would have been sensible. But who? Briggs hasn't looked good enough in his few chances.

Yeah Patel was in my party from the start actually. But he seems to have dropped out of favour.

Stuart Broad (c), Moeen Ali, Jonathan Bairstow, Gary Ballance, Ravi Bopara, Scott Borthwick, Tim Bresnan, Danny Briggs, Jos Buttler (wkt), Michael Carberry, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn, Harry Gurney, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Craig Kieswetter (wkt), Michael Lumb, Eoin Morgan, Graham Onions, Steven Parry, Samit Patel, Kevin Pietersen, Boyd Rankin, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Taylor, James Tredwell, James Vince, Chris Woakes, Luke Wright.

This was the big squad. Borthwick and Briggs don't look pickable. But Bell was selected from outside the 30.

Oh yes. I'd have tried to get Carberry in there. Carbs, Patel and a spinner.

Spinners out of favour today. Too much dew . So just Tredwell (plus Ali). And we have Bresnan and Dernbach...

Going to want a big score .

Mushy follows Gooch through the exit. Saker holds on to his position.
