How Good Is Timothy Bresnan?

I think Tim's a great bowler who can bat pretty well too. He's never going to be classed as a legend of the game but you would usually pick him in the squad we have at the moment.

Can’t disagree with that, other than, given current form, to substitute “always” for “usually”.

Selectors have dropped him as in their view Ben is a better to be the preferred player.Ben showed that he is a better batsman than Bresnan and has also outperformed Bresnan with the ball.Also, from whatever little Pro40 and international cricekt i follow, Ben is definitely a better fielder.He did suffer a broken finger in some domestic match last year but i hope his fielding remains unaffected by that injury.Given all the happenings, even though Bresnan is a handy cricketer, Ben has turned out to be a better performer thus far and has outperfroemd Bresnan in very short time and has a advantage of a ton which Bresnan does not ahs any to his achievements.Bresnan so far has been dropped for inclusion of Finn or Tremlett or second spinner.Now he has more competition from Ben.It will be tough for Bresnan to maintain place as he has underperfmed since his injury.

I’m not sure I understand what is meant by “Ben is a better to be the preferred player”, but I think I get the thrust of the post. However, the constant use of Stokes’ first name and Bresnan’s surname throughout the post may indicate a less than objective viewpoint.

Most importantly though, Stokes is new to the opposition and new players often return impressive figures before they get worked out. It is strange how some seem not to understand this.

A bit of advice to people who think they have found a new hero to worship – beware of premature congratulations.

The problem Bresnan may have, is if England don't see Stokes as a number six, and play six batters plus Stokes. At the moment though, it's the same scenario as when England played with four bowlers. Rankin didn't look great today, although way too early to predict anything. Tremlett has gone, Finn is still in contention, and maybe Onions as well?

Yes, Rankin's selection may have been a case of the selectors thinking they'd better play one of the three tall, quickish pace bowlers they took on tour in one test match before the series ends.

It's strange that Bresnan lost out, though, after being our best pace bowler in the last two tests.

Bres got hammered in the 2nd innings of the 4th test and lasted only 7 overs, maybe that was his downfall. He bowled beautifully in the 1st though. Stokes at only 22, looks a very good prospect for the future and a good replacement as a bowling allrounder. I hope we haven't seen the last of Tim as he's such an honest player who always gives 100%.

Bresnan took five wickets in two games and mainly looked likely to take a wicket on being slogged in both second innings. No doubt he'll be back, but it's not surprising England looked elsewhere. His problem remains being a fourth seamer, and a number eight bat, which isn't quite enough. That only really works if you have a more remarkable all rounder in the team. So maybe he'll rely on Stokes' potential to be a third seamer, which is probably a long way off. Either way, I suspect he's going to drift out of the Test set up.

Four catches dropped, though, good enough to be third seamer, as he has already demonstrated, and our best seamer in the last two tests. Reports of Bresnan's demise are greatly exaggerated and the jury must still be out on Stokes.

Yes, it is overused and, like all of our current bowlers, Bresnan is a long way from being "great". However, taking into account all attributes, one only has to be good enough.

Of course D/L, I'm not saying he shouldn't be in the team but I can see why some are unconvinced.
