Bookies lose Rs. 5,000 crore as punters refuse to pay for 'fixed IPL matches'

Reference:
http://www.ndtv.com/article/cities/book ... herstories

The recent crackdown on the spot-fixing racket has caused losses worth Rs. 5,000 crore to bookies in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai, sources have revealed. Punters, who had earlier placed bets on matches, have now turned the tables on the bookies, refusing to pay them their dues, based on the logic that the matches were fixed.

Bookies, forced underground since the spot-fixing scam broke, have been making calls to these betters who lost money on bets placed for IPL matches, in hope of exacting their ill-gotten gains from the clients. The task however is turning out to be harder than they had anticipated. Their clients have now gone on the offensive. Refusing to pay for their losses, these betters claim that the bookies cheated them by taking bets from them and then fixing the matches to rob them of profits. A source revealed that four days ago, a bookie approached one such better at her residence in Bhandup.

Asked to cough up Rs. 17 lakh that she had lost in matches, the woman refused, saying that she had no idea that the matches were being fixed. When the bookie in question threatened retribution from his underworld connections, the woman retaliated by threatening to lodge a rape case against him. The bookie was left with no option but to retreat.

The bookies have direct links with underworld because the king pin of betting business is most wanted terrorist. So those who have rejected paying are risking although they have a genuine and valid reason. Neither the betters nor bookies can approach police or courts because betting is illegal in India. Betters know that the bookies are hiding so they might have a chance to get off with huge losses. Or maybe delay it as long as possible until they hide from the police. But yes, risk will be there once this scandal inquiry finishes and bookies surface again.

Just to further show how much of a mess Indian cricket is in, Cricinfo are reporting for a short period of time Dohni was a shareholder in the management company which represents Jadeja, Raina and CSK. Or in other words he was directly benefiting from any increased exposure they had, for example playing in CSK or being selected for India, both of which he has a say in.

Now BPL spot fixing

Ashraful suspended by BCB
http://www.espncricinfo.com/bangladesh/ ... ory/638948.

Mohammad Ashraful, the former Bangladesh captain, has been suspended by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), until the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit submits its report on investigations into suspected match-fixing and spot-fixing allegations in this year's Bangladesh Premier League (BPL).

The BCB president Nazmul Hassan said Ashraful, who represents Dhaka Gladiators, had admitted to his involvement in "fixing" during the BPL. "As Ashraful has confessed his involvement in fixing to the ACSU team, so he should not be allowed to play any level of cricket until we get a full report of the investigation," Hassan told reporters

He first tried all attempts to defend him by opposing all judgements of courts and having failed to prove not guilty after exhausting all options , he now decides to apologize. PCB should not select him and neither he should be allowed to play in domestic level , because such a person will only corrupt more younger cricketers.

the time for him to admit his guilt in the hope that it might mitigate his sentence was before he has wasted all that time and money going through all the possible appeals channels vehemently proclaiming his innocence

I wonder if he has or will now give detailed information the the whole web of corruption he was part of, including names. Now that he's made this admission he should have his ban increased if he doesn't cooperate fully with the ICC anti corruption authority.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

I don't really see how 'apologising' affects anything: to me, apologies are just words. Maybe Butt thinks it will reduce his penalty - there was a case in our local paper a few days ago when an offender, according to his defence solicitor, "was truly sorry and had shown real remorse"; when he was found guilty, it turned out that he had over 100 similar previous convictions.
