Maybe not among the best in terms of strokeplay but in terms of his grit, determination and the mental toughness to come out of a rough patch, it was probably one of his best. Mark of true greatness as he resisted one of his bread and butter shots, the cover drive, as that had been leading to dismissals in earlier games. Scored 189 (I think) of the 243 runs through the leg side. In many ways, it marked the beginning of a new phase in his career. The accumulator was born.

You're right, it was a gutsy knock. That said, I remember watching that innings and thinking, this isn't the Tendulkar I use to watch. I admire the restraint he had but tbh, India were in a good position, and runs were easy to come by. Was their any real need to cut out certain shots.

I don't rate that knock highly. The best I have seen him play has to be at Edgbaston in '96.

For me, he was at his best at around that time. Like Shanky said, he became an accumulator, which is a tad disappointing.

There was a period between 07/08 to say 10/11 when SRT played more of an attacking role. If you think about that knock at Edgbaston you rarely remember a false shot. There was a lifter from Lewis which troubled SRT but iirc he somehow managed it to guide it past the vacant gully region.

So Tendulkar should not be dropped despite being poor for over 2 years yet I saw the same poster calling for Kohli to be dropped for Rahane after 3 bad Tests vs England. Nice to see people being consistent in their views and not show any bias towards players from their city. Oh Wait!

And yes, don't think too many will disagree that SRT over the course of his career has been a better player than Dravid but to say that he's a "different class altogether" is slightly disrespectful to Dravid. For starters, Dravid has the better record over the last 2 yrs though I do agree that he timed his retirement well. SRT should've been told to retire from both tests and ODIs immediately after the Eng series but they didn't and I guess they had to pick him after he played in those domestic games or else there would've been an outrage over him being disrespected and all that. And he certainly indeed played well in that first Test. But to say that he is undroppable is ludicrous and no, I don't think he should go to SA. He is probably the only player to have an average of over 40 in all Test playing nations and I can certainly see his average in SA going d down below 40 if he plays that series.

Just went through a few posts. Actually, those who rate Dravid as a better test match batsman make valid points too. Hard to judge.

Tendulkar's retirement from all forms of the game aside from first class cricket surely means his complete retirement is on the horizon. He made a pointed referance to his age during his statement announcing his retirement, personally I think he's made a massive error not retiring on the back of a series victory against Australia, a poor series against South Africa will make his position untenable in the side. There is no tougher assignment in world cricket than South Africa at home, his reflexes are clearly slowing and South Africa have the best pace attack going and they're going to be spicy wickets.
