Why? whats wrong for saying I have a little respect for someone who sticks thier hand up and admits that they broke the law, which is exactly what Amir did.

By the way respect doesnt mean I condone what he did, i dont, and never will. I've been quite open in my views on spot-fixing, saying that they should be banned for life from all forms of cricket regardless of whether they owned up or not.

Problem is he liede throughout the ICC hearing, claimed innocence and only pleased guilty just before the trial when faced with overwhelming evidence of guilt. The guilty plea also saved him for what would have been an uncomfortable cross -examination

Surely Adi, the fixing in UK is done for the benefit of Asian gangs? There are betting scams over here, but I've never heard that any of these incidents has been instigated by criminal elements in this country.

One thing is for sure. People like you and me will not be at helm of match fixing racket. They have to be criminal in a way like offering money to lose matches, gangsters in a way like recovering money from those who fail to pay the lost bets, etc etc. Asian gangsters are well associated with owning up the rackets and fixing players by force or recovering money by force is how they thrive in this business. One of the betting racket kingpin was declared as one of most wanted gangster by Indian police last decade and the same person was declared as one of the most wanted terrorist by USA about few years back. To add to it would such most wanted gangsters/terrorist allow any kind of competition to their lucrative business. A phone call from them will put fear in those who do legal betting business. Only the influential and like minded can compete with them at least in Asia, such is their clout. They have a system in place to deal with everything that opposes their fixing business.

As for who runs the betting in UK, who knows :dunno A through inquiry of Mayfield and kaneria, those who offered them money, those who recruit the ones who offered money have to be quizzed by the local police. That needs to be done to come to conclusion about who is at helm of match fixing in England.

Arthur,

some of the horse race fixing is organised by syndicates, but its generally easy to spot the betting patterns of an event, eg lots of bets suddenly going onto the favorite to not-place will raise flags, especially if the favorite doesnt subesquently place.

As for the Westfield case, I beleive it was someone who did this on the asian betting markets rather than on the english ones, who monitor specific betts, eg seeing a huge number of small-medium bets going onto a specific event will raise flags.

Adi,

I thought we had discussed it before, glad to know my memory isnt as bad as it can be, I see the pro's and cons with all of it, the question is do the pros out weigh the cons, and that is only something that an individual country can weigh up.

OSY, IMO given the various pros and cons i would not be happy if Indian government legalizes it at this point of time.

Well the PCB has summoned Kamran Akmal to one of its integrity hearings, are we about to see the Sydney Test bomb finally burst or more black cats skinned for standing too close to ladders?

As an aside I'd never noticed this before but the intro to Akmal's cricinfo profile is rather good:

Kamran Akmal may well be the most emphatic proof of cricket's changed priorities post Adam Gilchrist. Sides now search for an explosive batsman who can change a day, an innings, a phase with the bat and so long as you can identify right wicketkeeping glove from left, the place is yours.

Knowing how the PCB "Bans" work I wont be surprised if Kaneria plays and ends up as the leading wicket taker in their domestic FC competition in the upcoming season.

"Former Bangladesh cricketer Shariful Haque has been banned for an indefinite period after spot-fixing allegations made against him before the Bangladesh Premier League by Mashrafe Mortaza were substantiated, BCB president said after a board meeting.

Haque played one ODI for Bangladesh, against India, in 1998 and had unofficially retired from the game. He worked with Biman, the national airline, which Mortaza represents in the Dhaka Premier League."
