Spot Fixing?

What's buzzing in the world of cricket....

Just seen this on Cricinfo.

BREAKING NEWS: Former Pakistan international Danish Kaneria has been found guilty on two charges by an ECB disciplinary hearing into spot-fixing. The panel said of Kaneria's evidence: "We consider in many respects his evidence simply does not stand up to scrutiny and is plainly lies." They conclude that "Kaneria knowingly induced Mervyn Westfield not to perform on his merits in the Durham match [where he agreed to concede 12 runs in an over in September 2009]. It is self evident that such conduct brings the game of cricket and cricketers into disrepute." Sanctions are to follow...

ECB have found Kaneria guilty of "knowingly induced or encouraged Mervyn Westfield not to perform" in the Durham Match.

Danish Kaneria has been banned for life. He's only the 4th cricketer ever to have a life ban - Hansie Cronje, Salim Malik, Mohammad Azharuddin are the others.

Is that from all cricket?

It was an ECB disciplinary hearing. Do they have such powers?

Unsuprisingly Kaneria is set to appeal the ban, frankly he has nothing to lose by doing so.

You'd have to feel that the out come of any appeal will depend on what decision the PCBs own hearing which is set to conclude shortly reaches.

Not too prejudge the case presented but I wonder whether the PCB can show they have moved beyond the power politics Butt was so fond of playing.

It seems that Kaneria has only been banned for life from playing in England and Wales. That makes more sense than an ECB ban having worldwide effect, although the ICC has recommended that it should be respected worldwide:

Not so Delta, all ICC members are supposed to uphold bans from other countries.

"I will ask the Board to remind all Members to put in place appropriate mechanisms to ensure that the sanctions imposed on both players in this case are appropriately recognised and respected outside of the ECB's domestic jurisdiction"

This whole incident has got me thinking about the rebel tours again, most of the West Indians were banned from all levels of cricket in the Caribbean - for a limited period of time - but some such as Stephenson continued playing overseas including in England - for Gloucs and Notts if memory serves - while he was banned in the West Indies.

So is this all for one and one for all a new thing?

I think the ICC has probably tightened up the rules on Bans since the 70's and 80's. I dont think the member boards are legally bound to enforce the ban, they are just advised that they should.

The interesting thing was that Westfield, received a 5 year ban from professional cricket but can play club cricket in 3 years.

I dont know if anyone read the transcript but it makes for interesting reading in regards to how the panel arrived at the decision http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/current/story/569429.html

One overseas player who is currently playing Twenty20 is suspected of spot fixing in non-televised Twenty20 matches during 2008, this coming from a senior player.

I wouldn't put it past said overseas player is spot fixing this year, even in at least one televised game.

Senior player was reported to be foaming at suspected overseas player and accused him of taking the club for a ride.
