By this logic he shouldn't have played the 2011 WC.

He hasn't played every series for years.

that was my point...i dont think its fair that he can pick and choose....your either fully commited or you dont play...

Picks away tours. Misses the home ODI's. Is it so hard to understand? Was injured for England away series. Rested for the whole WI tour. Played SA ODI's.

Think you're underestimating how big a win it would have been to win this ODI tri series. If he hadn't played, the same posters would question his commitment to India.

England's_No7 wrote:At the moment, Sachin is only playing the odd ODI series which isn't helping him or the team. India will never have a settled top order because he is in and out of the team. If Gambhir and Sehwag do well then one of them will still be shifted down to 3 because when Sachin is back, he has to open. Sachin rarely plays ODIs now and looks rusty because he isn't playing in the format regularly. He either has to commit to playing in most ODI series or he has to give it up. If he isn't going to play in the 2015 World Cup then he should quit ODIs after this CB series.

Yeah cos he didn't look rusty in the tests. Maybe, just maybe, he's in some bad form and not finished. And he is struggling as much as Raina, Rohit, Jadeja... And again, WC we did crap of course with the same method...oh wait.

All this said, there are valid arguments to suggest he shouldn't play ODI's after this. But not this, he needs to play more ODI's or whatever as he's unsettling the team.

You also don't always need to build to the WC, just need to peak as a team in the WC year.

I just feel that it is the right time for SRT to call it a day in one-day cricket but he should continue to play in tests as India need the experience of SRT.

I think Sehwag will have a huge World Cup in 2015 if selected to play.

A bit optimistic when when you look at his ODI record in Oz.

Is it always statistics?

Or is perhaps to do with state of mind and the fact that if there is no SRT then he will be the 'key player.' Even with a 42 year old SRT, I still think a lot more would be expected of Sehwag than SRT.

Dont think a 37 year old Sehwag will be selected in all honesty.Key players would be Kohli and Dhoni.

I would take a 37 year old Sehwag over a 42 year old SRT. But then this is not an age debate. Merely sheer talent.

India have a similar conundrum to England in many ways: they have 6 players who should be playing most games; Tendulkar, Sehwag, Gambhir, Kohli, Dhoni and Yuvraj (when he returns to the side) but at the same time they need to get new players in to the side to build up a pool of experiance with one eye on the up coming World Cup.

Tendulkar remains one of the best players India can field in the ODI format, but at the same time he is the least likely to continue from that core group of players, with the overhaul of the test team in the very near future, as it seems almost certain that both VVS and Dravid will be hanging up their boots very soon, perhaps his experiance and time would be best invested in guiding India through the test transistion were things look a little less certain for the time being.

Will India be a weaker side in ODIs with out Tendulkar? Certainly, but will the impact of him retiring be more significant for the test team? Certainly.

With Sehwag and Gambhir India can play a top order batsman into the side, as I don't think Dhoni's rotation of the three of them is a policy that can really lead to a brighter future. Perhaps it is slightly unfair that such a great player could become the victim of the times, but as always the teams progression should come above sentiment and some times, class.

I wouldnt,outside the subcontinent.
The fact that Raina has done better than Viru outside the SubContinent over the past 4 years speaks volumes although you will disagree.

Funny, how would you know what I am going to say before I say it. This whole argument is of course pointless because SRT may well be retired (likely), Viru - the most destructive cricketer of all time - will likely still be going. Thus, Viru will be selected (very likely) and Viru will be able to showcase his abilities.

Thats why I am saying you are being a bit optimistic as Viru hasnt scored runs outside the SC for a very long time.If you think he is suddenly going to showcase his abilities at the age of 37 then thats a bit optimistic. Not impossible though.
