Be very surprised at this point.

When he first broke through he played a lot of T20 franchise cricket, and did very well in Australia just before Covid. He then blamed his lack of form on Covid lockdowns and pulled out a few leagues, and I think Brisbane Heat were upset they signed him and he didnt turn up, so he never played in Australia again. And he has slowly lost all his contracts in Franchise cricket, to the point he is now only playing in the UAE and England, with the former being a low standard competition.

I think he does ok for Somerset in T20s but his form in the 100 has been incredibly poor. I think last season he hardly scored a run.... hence why he is now trying to turn into a 4 day player. He scored a 100 in the 4 day game this season, but I think also a lot of failures.

I don't recall the exact year, but i had him in yearly Fantasy League after the initial promise he showed in some series or tournament. He played in IPL too for KKR after PSL. Had a very poor IPL. This season he isn't doing good in Vitality Blast FL and there also he is scoring very few points.

His T20i strike rate is 147 in combination with bat avg. of 23.35. SR is very good but his batting average needs to be better. Some leeway can be given that he can keep for England in future, so it is fine if his bat avg is couple of basis points lower than other specialist batters having that strike rate? But then Phil Salt is scoring at 166 and he had success :panic Then Jos is scoring at 145 and he has so much success across T20 leagues. Jonny too is scoring at 136 and has experience and knack of scoring significant innings. So Tom has lot of tough competitors in T20i and probably even in ODI.

Test format, Ben Foakes was very impressive with glove work. I doubt Tom Banton will be as good as Ben Foakes on basis of what i have seen ben keep in test series against India in India. Guess someone must be there in test keepers waiting list between Ben Foakes and Tom Banton and i won't be surprised if its a longer list considering he was more suited to short format batting.

I think the main problem Adi is, its going down in major competitions. He did well in the UAE tournament for Dubai, but this is basically a league for reject English C team players with not much international future, and a few Pakistanis. Its not top level cricket.

In top level competitive T20s his long term form is a problem.

His strike rate of 147 in T20i which is of international matches. But yes, his scores are inconsistent in four series which he played (AUZ,NZ,PAk,WI).

18,31,7,71 - NZ (2019)
71,20,46 - Pak (2020)
8,2,2 - Aus (2020)
4,25,73,4,16 - WI (2022)

Last he played in Jan 2022. No T20i in more than 3 years now.

Yes, there is lot of difference in league tournaments like IPL, BB, T20VitalityBlast, CPl,PSl,LPL, Abu Dhabhi T10 etc and international. The players in T20i are in majority numbers much better than the T20 leagues across the globe. Scoring a hundred of big scores will be different in T20i than blasting a 100 in such leagues.

Phil Salt has 2 hundreds in T20i last year. His consistency has improved performance in 2023 than what it was in 2022.

The decline of Tom Banton has been a real shame and a sad one to see....Seemed to have all the talent, all the shots and the swagger to go with, but just hasn't delivered....and I'm not really sure why as he is clearly good enough

No Foakes, Bairstow, Leach or Robinson

most importantly, no Robbo behind the stumps.... he has much more important things to do

You forgot the golden rule of English cricket; Surrey players waiting at the taxi stop get picked up first. :slap

Look at the current Keepers in county cricket as an example

Ollie Robinson... 744 @ 82.5
Jordan Cox - 763 @ 70
Joe Clarke - 680 @ 68
Alex Davies - 712 @60
Jamie Smith 507 @50

And the winner is the Surrey player who has scored the least runs at the worst average and who hasn't kept a ball all year :facepalm

With the form of the above potential keeping options + being nearly 35 + a tremendous dip in form across all formats recently, will we ever see Bairstow in an England shirt again?

This list of players does not inspire confidence in the slightest at the moment. HArdly anyone is coming off the India tour fit and making returns.

Ben Stokes averages 6 with the bat in 3 CC games this year, coming off a disaster tour of India
James Anderson is retiring after one game.
Ben Duckett has been unfit recently
Zak Crawley has failed 9 out of 10 innings this year.
Matthew Potts is averaging nearly 40 per wicket
Woakes scored 8 runs and taken 1 wicket in 2 matches this season
Ollie Pope is having an absolute mare this season (average of 20 across a lot of matches in the CC)

Brook and Root have done well, but in Division 2 where its easier. And Brook has missed a lot of cricket. Duckett is on form... that's pretty much it from the established players.

Then the newer lads....

Shoaib Bashir averaging 80 a wicket this year.....
Gus Atkinson averaging 30 a wicket...
Pennington has played a couple of good matches recently, but was he ever a standout before that? Another who averages about 30 in his career in an era of low scoring.
Dan Lawrence always looked crap for England.

I was pleased they went for smith.

As far as the others are concerned, like has hit a wall since the opening few matches and Davies scored most of his runs on feather beds with the kookaburra. Cox I know nothing about really.

But yeah……. I think Durham dodged a bullet today

I watched stokes bowl Somerset out a couple of weeks ago. His bowling was so good….. astonishingly good. He desperately needs a score today though and the signs are not looking great tbh. Maybe that’s what forced the change of keeper? Bairstow is done, you won’t see him no more

I believe Smith has actually kept in two games for Surrey this year . And has just celebrated his call up with a hundred so can't really complain about his selection (though your lad looks a bit unlucky , DFM ) Only really going to see whether he is up to the Top Level when he plays it so we will see over the next few weeks...

Going to be a new look to the bowling , especially after Jimmy's farewell game. Hope it works better than the "reset without Broad and Anderson" project that stalled in West Indies two years ago !

The article I read suggested he kept in the T20s, but has never kept in the CC.

Its not a bad pick on paper, it just annoys me that Surrey players always get favoured. Robinson clearly deserved the call up.
