1 match in 9 has actually started at this most critical part of the season

They will say that the weather is unreliable at any time of the year, but to schedule 50% of the CC season at times of the year when you might get lucky with the weather suggests to me that it may not be the weather that's problematic. The weather is what the weather is, but the ECB don't give themselves a chance...... and worse.... they don't strike me as being interested enough in giving themselves a chance to try and do something about it

It's ssiping down again at chez Footman, so there is probably no chance at all of any play taking place today. In the past, when this has happened, day 2 is often okay, but no play takes place because everything is so wet from day 1. The weather on day 3 is forecast to be similar today. It reminds me of the first game of last season against Hants, where there wasn't a huge amount of rain during the 4 days, but the weather had been so bad leading up to the game that they just couldn't get out there, even when it wasn't raining and eventually the match was abandoned without a ball being bowled over 4 days

I've only just discovered that Essex play on a hybrid pitch at Chelmsford. Fairly recent innovation, I believe and coinciding with the decline of SRH as a CC force of nature

I'm hoping someone will tell me what a hybrid pitch is, because I have this image in my head of these cheap artificial garden lawns, laid because nobody wants/can cut the grass
