They are personal and idiosyncratic and are hard to get made. It's encouraging that these kinds of people are out there, looking for different ways. They tend to appeal to critics... but not all critics. I'm not a fan of DL, but there are other film makers who are also going their own way that I do like. I think that's how arthouse cinema works.

I am not really offended or shocked by much of cinema, be it grotesque violence or graphic sexual stuff, so this sort of thing passes me by. There are people who get a strong emotive response from that, be it negative or positive, so each to their own I guess. Blue Velvet seems like a real risque type thing that appeals to those who feel they are watching something naughty or taboo. I have a friend who really likes that sort of thing, and the more off the wall it is, the more he enjoys it - he really loved Serbian film for instance because it was so wrong, but it did not remotely get a reaction from me.

The only exception is realistic portrayals of violence around everyday situations or settings - it always judders the obsessive compulsive person in me to wonder if I could be capable of the same.

The scene at the ending of This is England for instance .... utterly terrifying.

Not really my era, football-wise, so my abiding memory was of him scoring in the last match of the season that sent Man Utd down. He just put the ball away, turned around, didn't celebrate, didn't do anything other than walk quietly away. A quick check tells me that was in 1974, so one of my earliest football memories really, given that I wasn't even aware of football until Sunderland won the FA cup in '73

Aged 78, vocalist and 60s face, Marianne Faithfull. Formerly one of the decade's great survivors.

I was a fan of her 80s renaissance of broken down, decadent, cabaret torch songs. Sort of a posh-mod, drug wrecked UK version of the older Billie Holiday. RIP.

Gene Hackman dies under suspicious circumstances aged 95. Not a particular favourite of mine, but a significant figure in the New Hollywood of the late sixties-seventies, with roles in Bonnie and Clyde, The Conversation, Night Moves and especially The French Connnection. Also in multiplex moneymakers like Superman and The Poseidon Adventure.

For me, the best film he's in is Another Woman, supporting Gena Rowlands.

There are 1000s of films I have seen where characters are required to react to situations with bad choices or an inability to communicate, and I end up wanting to throw the remote at the TV because no one in real life could be quite that dumb. Hackman as Royal Tenenbaum was one of the few that utterly nailed the nuance of that type of character. I could sound off about it, but I know already you don't like the film - but he brought so much nuance and humanity to that role.

An acting performance for the ages, imo. It has always stood out to me for its quality.

RIP Royal...

I haven't seen many of his films but tended to play a similar character, Lex Luthor apart.

Mississippi Burning, Unforgiven, Behind Enemy Lines and No Way Out and Superman are the few that I have seen.
