Everyone involved in that red card decision should be banned from football grounds for life. Absolute joke of a decision.

seen it now. I don't think the player can have many complaints.... completely unnecessary. It isn't clear cut, but I think he could have avoided the second contact if he'd wanted to.

definitely Rooney-esque

I think you need to keep off the grog, DFM. :laugh

At the point Duran takes his last stride on his left foot, Schar is on the floor directly infront of Duran's natural path of movement, with Duran running at full pace. Schar has his feet in the air at groin/waist height, and from the behind camera angle you also see that the left foot of Schar is between the legs of Duran and wrapped around his right leg, while Schar's right foot makes studs up contact with Duran's groin. In the split second that follows Schar spins in the air, knocking Duran's right foot and sending him falling to his left He stretches out as far as possible to avoid contact with Schar, but as his left foot lands it slides on the turf, at which point he knows he is going down.

He has two choices. Either he just falls, at full pace, with loads of momentum, on to of his opponent or he tries to use his right foot to attempt to stay up. You see his right foot stretch out, sort of realise he can't get it over Schar, then he lands his foot as gentle as possible on Schar's back.

It appears to me that Duran had Schar's well-being very much in mind, and if he wanted to hurt him, he could have jumped full paced onto him or just fell bum first into his ankle/knee and put in him hospital. But he didn't, he tried to get out of it.

For that, he got sent off.

If thats a red card, Schar needs to go to..... studs up to the groin is violent conduct regardless of context, accident, or whatever.

I can say with absolutely no doubt, its the worst red card I have seen in years of football. Its pathetic.

Apart from the ability to fly, levitate or osmosis through Schar's outstretched body, maybe you can enlighten me what else he could do to avoid contact in this instance?

Could Duran not have put his foot down to the side of the Newcastle defender?

Image

The above photo is before Duran takes his last complete stride. You can see Schar's left foot is behind him wrapped around his leg, and his right foot is making contact high up on his leg.

Image

Duran then tries to free his right leg by raising it up out of contact, and then plants his left leg.... worth noting Schar is spinning on this photo from left to right, so in the split second Duran takes his next step he seemingly sees Schar rolling into the open space he was about to step into. He stretches a bit, doesn't plant the foot, and seems to go heal into the ground and momentarily slides.

By that stage, he can't then shift weight completely in 0.2 seconds to his other foot. He is starting to fall away to his left, so his foot either needs to stay in the air as he falls onto Schar with a heavy contact and all his body weight, or he attempts (As he did) to avoid it and just doesn't get his foot far enough.

Total accident. Referee is not fit for this standard.

Mark Clattenburg thought it was a straight red

What I thought was really funny was that Emery saw every bit of the red card incident and bemoaned the ref's lack of 'intelligence' (finger pointing at head) yet when asked, he didn't see any of the 20 man melee that happened in the tunnel right in front of him at half time (no finger pointing at eyes). He complained bitterly about VAR not even looking at the incident, so the journo had to point out that VAR did take a look at it and saw nothing that warranted overturning the decision.

The right foot didn't need to land on Schar. Most players make an effort to jump, or leap, or take some sort of evasive action so as not to injure the other player (you see it all the time with strikers and keepers), but there was something going on between the two of them; Schar left a bit on him and he made sure he left something on Schar. That's the way I saw it when I watched it. Schar's no angel, maybe he should have seen yellow, but Duran deliberately stamped on him in his follow through and tried to make it look accidental, but it wasn't.... not really.... and I guess the danger is that players will do it more and more if they think there's a precedent for getting away with it. Often you can tell by looking at the reaction of players around the incident. Dubravka's reaction was immediate, he was on him and in his face in a heartbeat. Players are not daft, they recognise this stuff for what it is.

in fact, the more I look at it, the more convinced I am that initially the right foot was going to miss Schar, until Duran pulls his foot back so that it lands on him and the studs rake him.

actually you noted the last minute movement too and we came to entirely different conclusions about Duran's intent. Completely subjective, of course, but I think he could have avoided the second contact and knew exactly what he was doing. As I said earlier, Schar is no angel and he does have that effect on some people

the MOTD boys think it was harsh..... although Shearer always over-compensates in these things to try and deflect from the fact that he's got black and white stripes running right through him.

They had a close up of Duran's left ankle rolling over when his left foot hits the ground, which they think is what accounts for the late change of direction of the right foot. Mmmm.... maybe.... I'm still not sure. Villa have appealed, so there is a chance for them to make the case. I guess we wait and see.

Big test for Newcastle coming up over the next couple of games. Three of these four wins have come at SJP and the away game was against Ipswich at the other end of the table. Man Utd and Spurs away in the next two games will be more of a test for a Newcastle side that can struggle on the road. Still, confidence will be sky high and those two teams have both had some consistency problems of their own of late, so who knows? :dunno

Liverpool look unstoppable atm. A 5-0 battering of West Ham in London, the latest, for an 8 point cushion at the top of the table

Jarred Bowen is completely wasted in that WH side and Newcastle are crying out for a top drawer right winger. Turns out that at the fag end of the Ashley/Bruce era, Bowen sat for hours drinking coffee in Wetherby Services while he waited for the call to head to Newcastle for his medical once the transfer deal had been done.... and Newcastle didn't do the deal :d'oh:

Of course they didn't... this was the fat lad, after all. Bowen's agent probably decided his client wouldn't settle for 50 quid a week and all the out of date pies he could eat

And you can tell him from me......I love when we beat 'em :halo:

I'm amazed it was only 2-0 in the end. Newcastle were 2 up inside 20 mins. Another goal was then chalked off and Tonali hit the woodwork in front of an open goal apparently. Sounds as though Man U got back into the game a little in the second half, but equally it might just have been a case of Newcastle managing the game in that second period

I'm bloody annoyed with Fabian Schar, though. Getting a needless 5th yellow of the season, 10 mins before the 19 game reset kicked in..... plonker! This back four have conceded one goal in their last five matches and now Eddie Howe has to make a defensive change for a difficult away game at Spurs. Lewis Hall was on 4 yellows going into this game as well, but he negotiated it and now goes back to zero. Trips hobbled off injured on the hour too.

Isak has had 3 goals chalked off for offside in the last two matches..... fine margins

Neville is right. Casemiro and Eriksen don't have the legs any more. And the back three of Maguire, Martinez and de Ligt can't run.

After the two goals, Amorim brought on Mainoo, and put him in central defence, and it then became a more even game.

This Manchester Utd side has too many players who should be pensioned off.
Nobody has a stance quite like the mighty Shivnarine....
