Why is his selection so polarising/controversial?

Mainly because he has a FC average of 25 and just 5 fifties from 30 innings altogether in red ball cricket. He has looked pretty handy in a few appearances with the white ball team , though generally batting in the middle - in fact I am not sure he has ever batted three in his life; so tossing him in there now in his first Test looks like the ultimate "wild card punt" selection. Pretty sure they had no intention of playing him in NZ , certainly not at three : but with Cox suffering his ill timed injury and no reserve keeper or other spare bat in the party they've now decided to make a virtue of necessity and spin this as a bold choice.

Will be interesting to see how he handles it . There is certainly talent there ; but I do question this insistence on plucking players out of relative obscurity on the basis of hunches and a bit of limited over stuff rather than picking those who have actually achieved pretty solid records in the FC game - and who are used to occupying the positions that need filling. If he fails badly , will they double down anyway and try to fit him in somewhere else - or discard him after only having seen him in an unsuitable role ?

They will say that they've "seen something" ; and that some other surprise selections have borne fruit. I'd be less certain of the latter point : Bashir did quite well in India , for example ; but has frankly struggled a bit subsequently , although they are persisting with him ahead of Jack Leach. But Hartley seems to have been discarded rather abruptly , Rehan is in and out. Seems to me those introduced who have had immediate success which has lasted more than a few games (Smith , Atkinson ) had rather more in the way of county form to justify their spots. And we won't even speak about Hull ...

Anyway good luck to the lad. He might need it.

Brook, Duckett, Atkinson, Bethell, Carse, Smith playing all formats. Not that they're playing that much, but it might become an issue.

Odi side could be

Salt
Duckett
Root
Buttler
Bethell
Smith
Livingstone
Atkinson
Carse
Wood
Rashid

I really hope they stop picking no batsmen and 7 bowling options now everybody is available.

Dissapointed rehan Ahmed isn't in the squad. No front line spinner to cover if rashid isn't available.

Odd that Topley isn't in, unless he's injured. Maybe unlikely he and Wood being fit at the same time.

Charlotte Edwards appointed women's coach.

Seems like the obvious choice, there's a lot of respect for her as former winning captain and she's proven to be successful in her coaching career to date. Lots of work to do to turn England women around though. Good luck to her.

England need to sort out what the ODI side is. Rather than just the odds and ends of who is available at the time and isn't in need of a rest. The successful ODI team of 5 years ago could be easily named, but England have picked 24 players in the past 6 months! Or is the team being deliberately, terminally squeezed?

Charlotte Edwards a good and logical choice : if anyone can get the women's team out of the their current slump and hopefully lift them up the next step that had looked likely a year or two ago it is probably her. Some of the tough talk that may be needed among the squad will be easier to manage coming from a woman coach. And she is a very smart person . I met her many years ago when she was still working her way up the cricket ladder and was impressed with her understanding of the game : suspect the years since have only improved it.

As for Harry Brook : wasn't really anyone else , was there ? Hope it doesn't prove too much of a burden for him as he is too important to the Test Team. Who knows , it might even help his white ball from , depends on what is in his head I guess. I agree with Arthur England need to sort out the white ball squad ; but of course this isn't easy to do given the messy and overcrowded fixture list - not to mention the injury issues that are a natural consequence. Wish him good luck ...
