well they weren't, but go through anyway after Sweden gave them a real fright

I didn't see the game, because I had small people here and they wanted to watch some american crap on the telly, but it sounds as though the women are turning into the men, nearly wilting as they went from bags of possession to being under bags of extreme pressure after Sweden made a couple of subs and turned the game on its head. Hampton seems to have had a particularly torrid time in the last quarter.

still... all forgotten now as it's Sweden who have to play some play offs to get to the finals... which they will.... as England would have done if they'd conceded in all that chaotic scramble at the end

I see Wiegman's name has been very loosely linked to the men's job.

I did wonder, but I doubt it will get any traction. tbh, the women have gone backwards quite a bit since she got her new extended contract.... with largely the same players at her disposal. White is the most obvious absentee and James the most obvious addition, but it's not as if there have been wholesale changes to prompt their struggles since the Euros win. Other sides have seen and seized upon England's weaknesses and Wiegman has struggled to counter that

All told, Newcastle brought in 9 new players with a lot of experience. It looks a very different squad to that which earned back to back promotions, so they clearly aren't looking to merely stand still.

London City Lionesses have also strengthened their side including the capture of Asllani from Milan and another player from PSG, so they clearly fancy a tilt at promotion to the WSL

The two sides face each other in the season opener on Sunday, which could be a bit of a cracker

Newcastle don't look out of place in this league if this match is anything to go by. 7 of the starting XI were signed this year, an 8th came on as a sub and 2 of the starters were only signed last summer, so as a team they aren't standing still. LCL hit the woodwork as well, whilst the Newcastle goalscorer inexplicably missed in front of an empty net from inside the 6 yard box. It was an awkward height, but still.... it was a sitter. Nobody picked up Asllani who scored their goal after finding herself in acres of space in the box

In theory it ought to be a very competitive league. Charlton and Sunderland only just missed out on promotion last year, Bristol City will be looking to go straight back up and Newcastle and LCL have both brought in a lot of experienced players
