The All New World Cup 2023 Thread.

Ashes, WI in NZ, SA in Pak

after a couple of early breakthroughs, England now seem content to let NL play themselves back into the game. Rashid is the main spin bowler, Mo and Gus are getting tap, why are they bowling ahead of Dilly? Buttler does realise that England have to win this by a big margin, doesn't he? Maybe nobody's told him :dunno

England got the job done. I confess I wasn't sure before the game. Bairstow, Root, Buttler and Brook still can't buy any runs, but fortunately Malan, Stokes and Woakes found some down the back of the sofa.

Next job is not to lose by a big margin to Pakistan. As long as the match is tight they may have just about done enough to save their blushes by qualifying for the CT. If they lose badly, then all bets are off. I have no confidence in an England win. NL beating India feels highly unlikely, as does BD beating Australia, but SL might end up with a rain affected point tomorrow and who knows, a second rained off match might see England drop back into the bottom two and out of the CT. Should that happen it would be difficult to consider England hard done by, given the dreadful performances they've put in. I think it's highly likely that they will end this tournament having only beaten the bottom two teams

Well, job done, I guess. Feels a bit odd - glad we won, but England beating Netherlands shouldn't be an event to remark on.

bigfluffylemon wrote:Statistically this knock by Viv Richards often gets called out as the best ODI innings ever - WI were 11 for 2 when he came in, then 102 for 7, then 166 for 9, and Viv scored 189 not out taking them to 272, and only one other player on either side managed over 26 runs. Was this better than that? Might well have been https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/wes ... -scorecard

The innings were longer back then (55 or 60 overs), so more time to get set before the assault, and more overs to score. Its impossible to find the information, but a video of the knock I found with the scoreboard suggests Windies added 50-60 in those extra innings, and pretty much all Viv.... so if we compare like for like, 140-150 with a worst strike in the 50 overs would have been a truer indication.

True it was 55 overs rather than 50, but there were also no fielding restrictions in those days, bats were smaller and strike rates were lower in general. If you compare Viv's career strike rate to that of his contemporaries, he was one of the fastest scorers of the era, along with Kapil. Botham, not exactly know for hanging around, had a career ODI SR of 82, and most players were in the mid 70s. Viv's was over 90, with a batting average of 46. Only Zaheer Abbas comes close to those kind of stats in the 1980s.

Not saying Viv's innings was necessarily better - already said that I agree Maxwell's was right up there with the very best of all. It's just very difficult to make those cross-era comparisons.

Gawd bless NZ......Yes they've put themselves in pole position for the 4th place SF place, but look at the mess they find themselves in, having to rely on England not folding like a pack of cards against Pakistan

They'll be watching from behind their hands on Wednesday, I reckon

According to the NRR calculations I saw, Pakistan would need to win by 287 runs, and can't overtake NZ's NRR at all if they bat second.

Even with the dismal heights of ineptitude that England have scaled at this world cup, that seems unlikely - England's biggest ever loss to date was 229 runs against SA a couple of weeks back, and they've only lost by more than 200 3 times in history.

Meanwhile Afghanistan are out - need to beat SA by over 400 runs. Not happening.

On the England side, on the assumption that at least one of Bangladesh or Netherlands will lose their last game, all England need to do to make the CT is not get thrashed by Pakistan too heavily. That this is even an issue and something to be concerned about speaks volumes, but still.

By my calculations on current NRR (so this assumes that neither Bangla nor Netherlands lose heavily - there could be more leeway than this)

Bat second - avoid defeat by 170 runs or more
Batting first is a bit harder, as there are two variables, but they basically need to prevent their target being chased down in less than 25 overs.

The question posed earlier (not here) was by how much would Bangladesh have to lose to Aus by to see their NRR slip below Sri Lanka's.

My blind guess was around 70 runs or 10 overs.
Maybe

I confess that I can't picture what differences in NRR look like in terms of runs, wickets and overs

I seem to remember Durham winning a T20 match earlier this year and despite this their NRR got worse, which seems counter-intuitive to my simple brain

It sounds like they had a fairly strong NRR, and the match in question was a close result.
