While FC Sheriff's victory in Madrid last night must be right up there with the most impressive giant killings in the history of football, if not the biggest, its hard to feel positive about the success of this club considering its parent company would make a list of the dodgiest operations currently in the world. Even when placed in the context of Tiraspol's well known endemic corruption, they are a special case - they recently offer voters cash in local elections to guarantee a favourable government, and the extent of the monopoly they have on everyday life in the breakaway Republic is something that is inescapable - they pretty much own everything in terms of infrastructure, shops, energy, telecoms - everything. Its hard to distinguish where the private entity and state start and end. Its an oligarchy vanity project that makes people like Chelsea look like nothing in comparison, their stadium is brand spanking new in a city that is falling apart.
Considering state ownership laws, I wonder if UEFA have done any digging into their arrangements and ownership -because I would guess they are not above board, and that it breaches several rules. Their former silent owner just happened to accumulate vast wealth when his father was President.
