I very much doubt he did have to pay. Obviously what he did for Irish football makes him a legend. I guess you dont get that type of abrasive yet warm characters in football anymore. Certainly a lot of amusing anecdotes around in the last day or two about him. RIP Jacky....
Not directly related, but I seen some comments about his home town in some articles; pretty crazy that Ashington, a tiny village of 20000 people, has produced two world cup winning footballers, a player voted in Leeds United all time team, Newcastle United best ever player (Jackie Milburn), a PGA golfer who finished in the top 5 of a major, a Wisden Cricketer of the year (Harmison), and several other professional footballers or cricketers.
Mark Wood comes from there too, so they are currently represented at the highest level of English sport. Pretty amazing, what are they feeding people there?
