Timed to run alongside the 3-Day competition - in a way that I predict we will return to in the County Champ one of these days, the One Day Challenge kicked off today.
Easterns had the upper hand over Eastern Province in Game One with a 6 wicket win. Young Khwezi Gumede failed to get a wicket in the three-day fixture but got figures of 3-32 to riffle out the middle order and help his team to victory. The young man is on a lot of peoples radar and was picked up as Cape Town's wildcard player for the MSL later this year.
Elsewhere in Group A, Gauteng beat KwaZulu-Natal Inland in a high scoring game. Kyle Nipper helped KZNI to a total of 269, contributing 68 runs. He was let down by his team's tail and subsequently Gauteng managed to get to their total in the 47th over.
The next round of matches are next Sunday when Eastern Provinces will face Northern Cape.
