Ranji Trophy

Don't quite know why this is overlooked as a domestic comp in the UK. I think perhaps it's sprawling nature in terms of length of time as well as number of teams makes it hard to track.

Enjoyed filling some of the festive time with it though. It's good for unearthing some of the IPL talent of yesteryear again

Today's star was someone who has featured in the last three IPLs however remained unselected for 2020 - Akshdeep Nath. The former RCB player - turning out for Uttar Pradesh - is 80* overnight as UP got to 222-3 chasing Saurashtra's first innings total of 331.

Big things were once expected of him but, for the moment, seems like tit has come to naught on the largest stage.

Mohammad Saif was the youngster to impress today as his century helped UP to a huge total of 523. The youngster got 165 in 382 balls. This game is very likely to be a draw now as we have just a day left.

For Ranji trophy to be followed more by fans , i would two major changes:

1. Selection panel needs to be better for all teams - Senior players who are in prolonged bad patch and dont seem like getting back form need to be dropped.

2. Captaincy by many captains need to be improved. At times it is very very negative mindset the way they ask bowlers to bowl.

The Points System was changed to improve the age old approach of first innings total approach in Ranji. It helped in reviving positive approach in Ranji matches. As it stands now post changes:

1. Outright win - 6 points
2. Team winning by 10 wickets or by an innings - 7 points
3. In case of draw match, team winning due to first innings lead gets 3 points and other team gets 1 point.
Test FL's - 8 , ODI and Tests Combo FL's - 1, ODI World Cup - 1, ODI FL's - 7, ODI and T20i combo FL's - 1 ,
T20 Franchisee FL's - 7, T20i Cup FL's- 1, T20 FL's- 5 , 50 Overs Domestic FL's - 1, 40 Overs Domestic FL's- 1

I didn't see This coming but And Saurashtra didn't see Saurabh Kumar coming either.

He took six wickets today to take his match total to 10 and skittle Saurashtra out just after lunch. Uttar Pradesh got an innings victory

UP move up to eighth whilst Saurashtra (temporarily) stay in third.

Bit of a shock on the cards as Bengal are well on the way to beating a star studded Karnataka team.

After getting 312 in their first innings, an Ishan Porel led Bengal bowling attack rifled the favourites out for just 122.

At stumps Bengal are 72-4 - a lead of 262.

Looks like the Ranji Trophy is going to Bengal.

They are batting so S L O W L Y to try and overturn Saurashtra's first innings of 425 - with one day to go they need just 49 runs.

Not scintillating cricket but nice for the underdogs. Wriddhiman Saha is the only big name batsmen in the Bengal side and he went for a 185 ball 64 today. Slow and steady.

Bengal absolutely blew it and did not manage to hold on. The IPL journeyman Jaydev Unadkat was the star man - first breaking the 90 run overnight stand and then getting the final wicket for Saurashtra to win their inaugural Ranji Trophy despite being in the final 3 times in the last 8 years.

Unadkat ends the season as the top wicket taker.
