The absence of Smith was the first thing I noticed from that touring party, so presumably he won't be the capt for the year

I can only imagine that Eckersley is hoping to fill the gap vacated by Davis as the sister's eventual replacement

Why "bad boy Smiffy, too"? Surely he hasn't blotted his copybook? In any case, I wouldn't have him as a definite starter in the first team anyway. The choice as skipper comes down to Rushworth, Steel, or Lees for me. I also reckon Eckersley is well worth a punt as an alternative to Poynter.

sorry KO, the first line was in reply to the comment about Warner playing in the IPL and I was noting that Steve Smith was too

Rather unfortunate then that I began the next line talking about the absence of Will Smith from the touring party

Lots of scope for confusion

Can't think of 2 more contrasting characters than Will Smith and Steve Smith. :D
Probably wise to exclude Will from 1st team plans in what is surely the final year of his career but he'd be a superb choice as captain and mentor in the 2nds.
Notice Rimmington is also absent from the touring squad. Can't see him being a CC regular. Wander if they've paid him off?

If they haven't paid him off then let's hope his appearances are confined to the one day game!

I'd have Steve as well. He can appear an obnoxious pillock but I firmly believe Warner and Lehman were the instigators of Sandgate.
As for Rimmer, we've contracted to pay him so might as well have him on stand by.

Yes, that makes more sense. I thought Will Smith had discovered his inner Keith Richards or something. Or had been "Burnham the candle at both ends".

I've always liked Will Smith

he had a raw deal as captain with Harmison unsettling the dressing room and undermining his authority at seemingly every turn

I agree. And then when he fought his way back into the team and made important contributions to the third title win he was released at the end of the season!

Speaking of Poynter I see he has made his test debut - against Afghanistan. No prizes for guessing how many he scored but quite bizarre that he was batting at number 6.

scored 1 run in his second innings

Yep! And most of the rest of the batsmen didn't get many runs either. Think Afghanistsan are a handy team.

Our 1st tour friendly v Yorks starts tomorrow. Wonder if the North Korean news agency will provide any score updates. Don't bet on it.
