As long as the pitch slowly deteriorates through natural wear then it should be fine. If the pitch stays like this and does not turn then it will be a very poor pitch.
If it suddenly becomes unplayable by day 3 then that is unfair on NZ and the toss will have decided the winner of this test.

Southee was injured, which probably helped make the decision - but there was talk that they'd go with 3 spinners anyway

They were reluctant to pick Monty in that series, and in the UAE whitewash. He was left out of both first Tests. In UAE last time, press were suggesting an all pace attack! England are expected to pick four seamers in India. Yet NZ drew in UAE with three spinners.

As is usually the case we shall see how NZ handle the pitch tomorrow.
Im guessing the Indian spinners will cause more problems than the NZ bowlers.
