Has anyone ever been rested before having played so few games?

Seems an odd decision to me as does the one to let Stokes play for Durham.

Yorkshire don't seem to be complaining about Joe Root not playing, which is a nearer comparison with someone like Anderson. Bairstow has said he wants to play, and hasn't a central contract, but isn't allowed to (Finn is playing and so is Stokes, and it's a much harder game for pace bowlers). Rashid is different again because he was given a choice. Still, it looks like it could all have been managed a little better.

Yes. If Rashid has a family emergency ( and he's surely telling the truth) then Yorkshire should have been aware of it yesterday when they put out a statement that at least implied criticism of the player. It sounds as if there was a communication problem between player and club.

Root plays all 3 forms of the game, Anderson only one. Anderson hasn't played any cricket in the last 5 weeks. One's a bowler, the other a batter. Whether you have a central contract or not has no connection to a players workload. Bottom line is ECB dictate England players availability and all counties have agreed to it.

Communication problem on Rashid's half if anything. If he really has a family emergency and suffering from physical/mental exhaustion, then surely the ECB would be alert to this given the sub continent tour starts in a fortnights time. More so given ECBs recent past of player wellbeing whilst on a lengthy tour.

For Rashid to release his own statement and conduct an interview with an independent cricket website is a strange one to say the least. Time will tell how much cricket Rashid will be involved in during the tour.

I accept each case has to be considered individually, as there is no reasonable formula for a cross current of factors to decide who plays and who doesn't. But as JB hasn't played fc cricket for over a month and limited overs cricket for over a fortnight, it's unclear why they came to that decision.

I generally think players need to get time off (as JB has just had). But there are a couple of factors that the pragmatic Strauss may not have taken into account. Players have one career, and it is quite a lot to ask JB not to take part in a championship decider, and it is something that he may well look back on with (perhaps unnecessary) regret. I expect it matters to him. And secondly, Yorks have taken back JB several times after being dropped by England and have accepted his loss and return without complaint. He'll be centrally contracted soon, and it feels like it would have been a sign of good faith between the ECB and Yorks (who are disrupted by call ups more than anyone else) that he might have been given this game, which has so little risk attached to it.

It's a difficult call for the ECB as had they acceded to Yorkshires request no doubt Lancs would have asked for Butler and Warks for Woakes for equally important games. Had they all been given permission they'd have only 5 or 6 days to relax before an arduous tour. Fact is none of them will relax and will be fully focused on the CC games. Might as well be playing then.Wonder if ECB would have listened if that argument had been put to them.

And watch Stokes duly go and relegate us. I'm not sure exactly of everyone's availability, but as far as I can see we're the only side to be taking on a certain test starter. (Vince has been dropped, Balance's starting place is under question, Finn is in and out of the side etc. I mean that pool of seven or eight regulars).

And he is an all-rounder playing all 3 formats so I'd have thought any chance for him to rest would be taken. If they don't think he needs one it raises questions about why they think others might. I know he's had limited playing time because of injury but still seems odd to me.

Resting Buttler is a very poor decision given how little international cricket he has played this summer and how little he will play this winter.

Interesting situation at Edgbaston tomorrow when Lancashire arrive for the last game of the season under the leadership of Ashley Giles who coached Warks and now might be on hand to see them relegated.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Must win game for Warks, we just need a draw and a bonus point. Can't call it, I feel we should be able to bat long enough to get a draw and we are capable of destructive spells of bowling, but, equally we are capable of proper batting collapses.

I fear Jake Ball could go through our top order like a dose of salts, they are incredibly rickety.

Ball plays for Notts last time I checked, Jarvis might go through your top order though. Kerri has discovered a little bit of form of late.
