It's a little over half a decade since Essex were last in Division 1, so I don't know how much weight to throw behind that statistic there, Sussex.

I believe Westley was involved in the Lions last year, so there's clearly some ECB eyes on him of late, and he's in cracking form. Still pretty young given how long he's been around the game.

Maybe a more up to date stat.....other Essex batsman's First Class averages with test matches removed

Ali Cook... averages well over 50
Nick Browne... averages 41
Bopara.... averages 43
Lawrence... averages 36 (who is only 18 and played a season)
Ryder...averages 46
Ten Doeschate.... Averages 46
Foster....38
Ashar Zaidi.... 37
Westley.... with the worst at 35

So, in short, the only selection conversation with Westley being involved should probably be the simple question of whether or not he should even get in the Essex line up with Cook about.

If its a middle 30's average with a century a season, maybe too in a good year, that you want then you basically put 70% of county players in the mix.

Well given he's played in the same side as Cook this year and done very well, that seems a slightly facetious comment to make there, Sussex.

Either way, the lad is in serious form, and there are several questions over the England batting line up.

sussex is using the typical way of winning an argument by choosing his stats that suit his case. A lifetime stat of 35 hides any improvement he's made recently. Last year his average in the CC was 39.1 and so far this year he's scored 2 X 100 and 2 X 50 to average 72.
I don't claim he's necessarily worthy of a place in the England team but certainly one to consider. Constantly taking early years of a players career into current reckoning is not what any of us would want for ourselves in our own careers.

I do love the idea that the Aussie ashes squad are friendly to their opponents in warm up games and Sl were probably grinning the whole time they were losing wickets and then couldn't get Westley out.

It might be reasonable to suggest, 2 months in, that the player of the season thus far is probably Brett D'Oliveira. He seems incapable of doing anything wrong atm

Shiv Thakor is on fire at the moment.

Average of 98 with the bat this season, and inside the 20's with the ball. Maybe there is some of that previously forgotten about promise there.
