The low scoring one day matches in spring is a complete myth, some games in the more recent Friends Provident Trophy had scores of 280 to 340. Even the current Royal London Cup had relatively low scoring matches for matches played in peak summer.

Personally I welcome the move of playing the One Day Cup in early season, providing the majority of matches are played on a Sunday or Bank Holiday.

TBH the myth is totally based on weather and start times for the games.
Think England vs Sri lanka odi series in may and england vs South africa series in 2012 is prove to how badly weather makes odi cricket in april/may and Setember become.

in good weather England got thrashed, overcast conditions england hammered sri lanka and in the latter series the team bowling first won the game with ease.

if the weather holds up the cricket will be fine, but the issue is when the weather starts being unsettled where the cricket isn't really fit for purpose.
Day nighters can be horrible for the cricket and so can the early start games.

if they can somehow make sure none of the wickets have any grass and limited movement then they should be fine in terms of preparation for the world cup.

The 2019 Cricket World Cup is scheduled to be played between 30th May and 15th July, chances are at least half the matches will be played in overcast weather so playing the Royal London One Day Cup in April-May is more likely to replicate the conditions.

The British weather is that unpredictable these days that April and September weather can be as good, if not better than May, June, July, August.

they don't have any sense, of course, so I've just wasted my time typing that out

A very good idea so you're right - no chance of it being implemented!

Good idea in theory, but a logistical challenge for two reasons:

Some counties will have played 4 home games after 9 rounds, others 5. Given England matches are played at the same time as County matches, the main ground may well be unavailable due to an International match being held. Not all test counties have designated outgrounds (say if Durham and Notts are in Division 2 in 2017) and those who do have to prepare a county standard wicket at short notice.

Ideally fixtures need to be scheduled before the season begins.

Ideally you do need to know fixtures before the season but D/F's suggestion is sound and can be put into effect using the previous seasons positions, ensuring that of the teams you only meet once,2 are from the top half of the table and 2 from the bottom half assuming the 2 relegated from the 1st division would have been top half. Whether the fixture compiler could handle such logistics is another matter.

Stunning scorecard from the Irani Cup http://www.espncricinfo.com/irani-cup-2 ... 02251.html

Karun Nair been impressive in both innings. Sheldon Jackson has also rounded off a good season here.

So Yorks v MCC starts tomorrow.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Doesn't feel right somehow. Technically this is the curtain raiser to the new county season but there's been little mention of it. Playing in a faraway country doesn't help. The good news is of course that the new season itself is just around the corner.

Hope the weather changes for it though. While those cricketers will be sweltering tomorrow, over here it was quite bleak today.

In the past there's been a radio commentary but apparently not this year.
