Beeb credits Sir Modi with ICL too. Didn't think that was the case or am I being dim?

I know that but that article claims Modi was the founder!

ECB have now confirmed Strauss' appointment.

It's on their website somewhere but I couldn't be bothered to look.

Yes. Pretty deflating and underwhelming news.

Strangely, I feel sorry for Peter Moores, for being sacked through a leak while away with the England team.

Guardian cricket posters described as 'bilious inadequates' by Selvey. So I won't be getting my sports news from there anymore. Cricinfo I guess.

Selvey is a ****.

When Ben Stokes had his bad finger injury a couple of years ago, Selvey said he'd never be able to bowl again.

Selvey treats his readers with disdain. Quite sad really, he didn't use to be like that. Abuse is, of course, completely unnecessary and unacceptable. However he has a problem with anyone who disagrees with his opinions or who call him out over his poor articles over the past 18 months. Tows the ECB line, repeatedly tells us that Downton, Cook, Moores, Saker etc are all fine fellows and therefore are beyond criticism, and refuses to ask the questions of English cricket that his readers are asking. Of KP, he would repeatedly boast that he knew all the evidence without divulging what they were.

Few journalists get such criticism below the line, but when it happens so frequently to a writer you have to wonder whether perhaps, just perhaps, there is a quality issue. Selvey hasn't grasped that yet.

How about he was less crap before but has become crappier over the last 18 months?

(Tbh I haven't read that much of his prior to 2014 but some of his current critics do say he used to be a good writer)

I think it happened in the 2000's, around the time of the 2005 Ashes series. You noticed that with more people showing an interest in the sport, his writing became more like lectures, and his manner became more guarded. He didn't, and still doesn't, like the fact that mere mortals could have an opinion that is comparable to his... he after all played for England and knows more than you, he went to Cambridge too so generally is smarter than you, or so he thinks. I always found his voice to be superior, smug and self serving, maybe that has got worse as time passes.

He is, and has been for some time, a dinosaur lost in a world of technology and internet critique, he just didn't move on. He must be near 70 now, his opinions, his style, his awareness of the modern journalistic style and its counter balances are completely lost. He thinks he can dictate his opinion to his readers because they in someway are tied to what he says, and seemingly becomes angry that people don't nod their head at everything he says.

He is also tied politically now to the established cricket elite of the ECB, and has become a ghost writer for off handed and morally bankrupt leaks, and for that price he has increasingly sold away what little currency he has in being an impartial and trustworthy source.

If the turning point for his accelerated decline into mere "hack without merit" is present, then it is the point at which he left TMS, sometime after the 06/07 Ashes. Ironically he left because the programme was become too boorish in his opinion, that there was too much heavy handed and opinionated discussion taking place. He much preferred to talk about which cake they were eating, or what was happening on the Arches, or whatever crap the TMS people used to discuss to pass time. Talking about strong opinions on cricket? Didn't want to know.

I think that really underlines how behind the times he was

Most cricket writer are much more reasonable when talking about cricket than when putting their opinions in print. The occasional discussions they have on TMS are quit interesting as are the Sunday morning discussions on SKY. That's the nature of the written word over the spoken word. A dressing down from your head master in his study is always easier to take than a letter to your Mum.
Work expands to fill the time available, so why do today what can be put off until tomorrow.

Good post that on Selvey Sussex. I didn't realise he was Oxbridge, he doesn't give the impression of being an academic. I wondered if he hit out because he felt a bit challenged by the more intelligent posters, but no, probably not. I don't think he was one of the cake brigade on TMS, he was more their straight arrow analyst. I thought he, Marks and Agnew were the heart of the commentary and were most of what made it so good. Some of its charm seems to have been lost now.

His, 'I was a professional bowler' schtick doesn't really work in relation to Selvey's interaction with the public. Quite often he would superciliously dismiss alternative views, even when the public was saying the same as Willis, say, or Vaughan. A bowler with 300+ Test wickets and a successful England captain. Which doesn't make them right either, but by Selvey's reckoning, they trump his achievements.
I always say that everybody's right.
