Arguable that Robson might be in the EPP.

I guess the Lions squad for SA wouldn't just be picked from these. There are those who are in the SL ODI party who could drop down. Woakes or Stokes, Gurney, Jordan. It'd be funny if Taylor got picked for another Lions tour.

It's obvious Andy Flower will be the next England Head Coach. In the meantime why not get a head start and coach the future regulars who will be ready for selection by the time Flower is reappointed.

England Lions first-class squad: Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance (both Yorkshire), Sam Billings (Kent), Jack Brooks, Alex Lees, Adam Lyth (all Yorkshire), Craig Overton (Somerset), Liam Plunkett (Yorkshire), Boyd Rankin (Warwickshire), Adil Rashid (Yorkshire), Adam Riley (Kent), Sam Robson (Middlesex), Jonathan Trott (Warwickshire), James Vince (Hampshire)

England Lions one-day squad: Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance, Sam Billings, Jack Brooks, Alex Lees, Adam Lyth, Craig Overton, Stephen Parry (Lancashire), Samit Patel (Nottinghamshire), Liam Plunkett, Boyd Rankin, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy (Surrey), James Vince

Interesting, Yorkshire heavy selections for SA. Strange Trott isn't in the limited overs squad, as he is being missed more as an ODI player, and the WC is ahead. Brooks in the one dayers? Nice to see Samit around. Unless it's a typo and they mean Ravi. Can't see why Ballance is going in the first class team, makes more sense as a ODI pick. I guess Rashid isn't being seen as a bolter for a WC place.

I guess that Broad will be added to the one day squad. That looks light on fast bowlers. Brooks (30), Overton (20), Plunkett (29) and Rankin (30).

These young promising bowlers, Gregory, Coles, Willey, Roland-Jones, Topley, Dunn, M Wood missing out. You want to find the newest young talent not some 30 year olds that aren't going to have long careers. Anderson, Broad and Finn all made their England debuts at 20.

Overton was back with the second XI and minor counties by the end of the county year. He goes at 6.3 runs per over in limited overs cricket, and goes for 4 an over in FC with an average of 45!!!!!

how the hell can they justify his pick?

Surprising Willey isn't in the limited overs squad. Good point by Slipstream about how experienced all these bowlers are.

Presume James Taylor is injured...

Lions selections have always been a bit flaky. They employ the same blindfold and pin method that was used for the main team in the 80s/90s.

The Kent picks are a bit leftfield. Billings and Riley.

I knew he was highly rated, but I think he is the only completely new player selected. Riley's just been in one Lion's squad.

Always good to see some fresh faces. England supporters have been complaining since tine immemorial about the 'old guard' - a worn out cliché if ever there was.

the only complaint I would have about the "old guard" with these lion's squads is the person coaching them

flower never really covered himself in glory introducing and developing players in his time as coach imo , in fact I would say more players regressed under him than improved
