There's a suggestion on Twitter that Ashwell Prince didn't regard the language used by Gale as in any way racist. Haven't been able to find any quotes from the player so whether that is true or not remains to be seen.

just because Prince didn't consider a racial element to the abuse, doesn't mean there wasn't a racial element to it, of course

If there was a racial element to it, then the officiating umpires would have reported Gale for a higher level offence.

it was Gale himself who introduced a racial element into an altercation which was about time wasting. Prince's Kolpak status had no relevance whatsoever to a time wasting dispute yet Gale chose to bring it in and do so in the most disparaging terms. I certainly don't think it would be unreasonable to expect the captain of a county team to set an exemplary standard of conduct to all aspiring young cricketers and this sort of conduct certainly doesn't meet that standard-the alarming thing of this episode is neither the County Captain nor the Yorkshire commitee appear to recognise the gravity of the misconduct.

He was effectively on probation after a previous charge( nothing to do with any accusations of racism as far as I know) so that's why the latest offence resulted in an automatic ban. Mike Atherton wrote about it in The Times-the umpires overheard the conversation between Gale & Prince and reported Gale for using abusive language, a level 2 offence but then the ECB intervened and upgraded the charge to a level 3 offence by interpreting his reported remarks as having a racist element.

Atherton was scathing in his criticism of the ECB, accused them of undermining the umpires by interfering and causing a situation that will drag on for ages with lawyers haggling over the details.

Since the umpires didn't feel his remarks were racist and neither did Prince, it does seem as if the whole thing could and should have been sorted out with less controversy.

That said, Gale should not have been using offensive language in the first place.

Yes he has effectively been charged twice,clearly if there was doubt about the severity of the charge they should have got clarification from the disciplinary board before acting-but it is the ECB!!
Hopefully both parties can learn from this-I have my doubts.

The long winter nights draw in and then we wait till the fixtures are released again in November so that we can start planning our attendance to games the next summer, and then wait patiently for April when the next season starts.
