There would be all sorts of possible excuses for an earlyish declaration.

Interesting, I was actually thinking about it when I typed it, I wondered if there was a rule, then ruled it out as it'd be impossible to enforce.

I agree. This is the ruling:
. 14 Law 14 – Declaration and Forefeiture
14.1 Extraordinary Declarations
An Extraordinary Declaration for the purposes of this rule is usually a declaration aimed primarily at denying the bowling side the opportunity to acquire further bonus points in that innings, but without enhancing the batting side’s prospects of winning or saving the match.
Such a declaration may, depending on the particular circumstances, be deemed as bringing the game into disrepute, penalties for which may include the deduction of points from the offending team.
A captain who is contemplating a declaration which has potential to be deemed an Extraordinary Declaration may, if he wishes, first approach the Officiating Umpires, providing due notice of his intention, in order to request an indicative ruling as to whether or not such a declaration is likely to be deemed an Extraordinary Declaration with the potential for bringing the game into disrepute.
The Officiating Umpires shall then request advice from the ECB Cricket Department who will (in liaison with the Cricket Discipline Commission and time permitting) provide an indicative ruling to the captain.
ECB Cricket Department may appoint an official to such matches to facilitate good communication between all relevant parties.

Come on he's done well in recent games, hopefully his performance suggests Ajmal might struggle too!

He has done recently, but 32 wicketless overs, whilst Maxwell picked up 2 in 4 isn't acceptable...its more Adams for constantly bowling him and not giving Smith a go that im unhappy at.

Not sure that anything can be read into Maxwell's two wickets at all. Both wickets were handed to us, with Worcs running out of wickets and therefore attempting quick runs.

But yes, Briggs going wicketless was disappointing.

Not sure we should be too surprised at a seemingly rather inept bowling performance all round though. We're basically back to the same attack as we've had in the past two years in D2. And as I think most Hants fans agree, it's been the bowling over those two years that has kept us down here.

The rest of this game is all about the follow on now, imo. If we do that we'll pick up at least two batting points (no matter how slow we bat against Ajmal, we should still achieve 250 from 110 overs), whilst also no doubt securing a draw. Unless Worcs made a very bold declaration, there simply wouldn't be the time left to force a result if we can avoid the follow on.

Thanks for everything Pothas. You'll be missed. My nickname for you was apt and I will never forget it. For the last time, arise Sir Nic.

Envisaging a slow crawl in our attempt to reach 253. I'll take 300 and three batting points to add to the two bowling to get us up to 120 in total.

Forecast says there might be some rain around in Worcester this afternoon, suits me and our attempt to save the game.

Big day for Hants. A gritty determined Boycott-like innings by Adams is probably needed. Ervine hasn't really got going this season so hopefully he can do one of his sheltering the tail classic knocks.
I thought hopes of getting the last 6 Worcs wickets for about 70 were wildly optimistic especially as Abbott was missing from the attack. Well done Balcombe - always appears to give 100%.

Benks said its a good pitch to bat on, and don't be mislead by Carbs getting out he was caught at leg slip.

That is a bit of good news although in the context of the game i'm still expecting slow progress. If possible deny them a third bowling point.
