350 would be a good score from here now. But if you offered me 300 - 320 now, I would take it.

Given no Carberry and no Dawson, for me this was always just an innings about putting something half decent on the scoreboard, regardless of the run rate.

I did say it.

We've gone from having the luxury of being able to bat Wheater down at no.8, to having a top seven containing Gatting and Bates. Not our fault, of course. But for me it did mean that this game was all about not being rolled over cheaply, and not losing the game.

You can't smash 400 and also win the match every time.

Without doubt our weakest batting line up by far of the season so far but I did think Bates would score 30 or 40 on recent form. Never mind our tail is bound to wag.

Can't complain at 228 in two sessions. Just a shame about the six wickets.

Thankfully Ervine is pretty proven at batting with the tail. And as you allude to Budget, it's not exactly a poor tail. Especially if Briggs continues to batting form from last season.

I don't see why he should. He's actually done ok this season. And offers something other than just batting.

That said, he still wouldn't get into my XI if everyone was available. And to be fair, the fact that he didn't start the season suggests that the club think the same.

I don't think I've ever slagged Bates off. Gatting should never have been signed, I'd wager that most of the batsmen in the second eleven are a better bet than him

I wouldn't of minded a dec there at 300, since we wont reach 350, get a good 8 overs at them tonight.

Look at Kent, 2/4

Good point but so few captains think outside the box.
Remember the criticism/abuse Glamorgan got when they declared against us a couple of years ago with 9 wickets down.

3 runs scored in over 5 overs, what a waste of time, hit out or get out

They declared when 41 runs behind though and then lost by 43, slightly different to when batting first, fair point though.

Abbott is a decent hitter, not quite all-rounder status, but his batting is close to his bowling average wise.
