Last two years

From the period when two new balls were introduced 1 Oct 2011
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine ... pe=bowling

If we look at the ICC rankings Finn is at number 4 and Anderson at number 5. Broad is at 33.

As for bowling at the death and in the powerplays lots of bowlers do and many of them have an economy of under 5.00.

Actually those bowlers who bowl in death over should have more wickets in career as they are more likely to bowl to tailenders.

That would take quite a bit of analysis to prove, but don't let that discourage you from saying it. First, one would have to define a "tail ender" (#9 or below?) and then one would have to accept that tail enders are at the crease more often than not towards the end of a 50 over innings, which is probably false.

Broad 32
Anderson 34

Finn 35
Gough 39 (this was towards the end of his career)
Bresnan 41

So if Broad is taking his wicket nine balls faster than Bresnan, that is quite significant, and means his % at each level of the order probably has more impact.

It could also be partly due to a little more good fortune. Bad, ball, bad shot... wicket seems to happen quite often with Broad, but long may it continue.

Broad,Jimmy and Finn have a good combo of SR and eco rate over whole career. But then these are after all statistics and Statistics are totally irrelevant .What matters is how well a cricketer has dressed, how well he ties the bowling shoes laces, how well he gives the impression that he is trying to take a wicket or keep runs down, how much his bowling depends on good luck and bad luck ;)

Stats are not irrelevant. but neither are they to be slavishly adhered to as the sole yardstick of performance, as we see here.

It is as foolish to do that as it is to think that the likeability of a captain will make a batsman determined to score more runs for his side.

In the last three years Broad seems to have gone forward in Tests and backward in ODIs. This stat shows both Broad and Bresnan playing in the same game 24 times and the difference in their figures. In fact you could drop Broad and have Anderson, Finn and Bresnan as the 3 best ODI bowlers.

Broad is their strike bowler in tests, has been rewarded as standby captain in ODI's and the preferred captain in T20.Every move of selectors and think tank (which involves him) regarding handling responsibilities, imo the selectors consider him as the core member of the squad in all formats. I can't see him being dropped unless and until he is injured or they want to try out new comers or test the bench bowlers.Apart from how the selectors are giving him responsibility, i too think that Broad has performed better than most of England bowlers and deserves the promotions he has been given on field.Whereas selectors have dropped Bresnan twice at least in last year or so which suggests that he is not core member of the test team.neither is he being given leading responsibilities like Broad in other two formats. He is not even the vice captain. Also it is obvious to me that they will not drop a core member of the squad for someone who is on verge of getting dropped when England have a fully fit 11.

If any bowler would be dropped to accommodate Bresnan in fully fit 11 in ODI 11 then he would be Chris or Rankin or someone other non core member of that inexperience and quality at the moment they are.And thats what the selectors are doing.

It became apparent very early on, when he continued to be selected, despite bowling poorly, that Broad was going to get preferential treatment from the ECB. Many put this down to his having an influential father. Broad Senior’s securing a bit of a non-job with the team backroom staff for Broad’s sister tends to support this view.

Broad has displayed petulance and immaturity during his career so his elevation to captaincy will have come as a surprise to many. It does, however, give further support to the above view and it would probably be a mistake to think that it had much to do with his playing abilities.

I think the difference might be that, while neither is a good ODI bowler, Broad has had at least a good period in his career, whereas Bres has always fallen short. Broad has been up to 4 in the rankings and spent a long time in the top 10. Bresnan has been as high as 19. Bresnan is only a place below Broad now, so there's not much in it anymore.

I suppose both will be around for the WC. Maybe we'll move on after that.

The impression i had with Broad and ODIs is that with injuries and being rested, he hadnt been able to get a decent run of matches going and therefore his performances had suffered. Dont know if that isd a fair judgment or not though.

Might well be true of all the pace bowlers. Since the start of 2012, Finn has played the most, and he's been in and out of the side. Bresnan has been injured a lot, Anderson rested, Broad injured and rested.

Yes, injuries have an impact more often than not.We are seeing workload and injuries affecting many England bowlers.Should be the same for other teams bowlers as well.

Even if there were a grain of truth in that claim, from the selectors' point of view, Bresnan's superior batting ability would more than make up the difference.

Timmy Bresnan showing his worth with the bat with 47* off 29 balls in the 1st Windies T20.

He has been contributing some good knocks in ODI versus OZ.Didn't see yesterdays match but 47 off 29 indicates its very good knock by a bowlers standards.

Bresnan lost them a ODI in the infamous 16 run over, and here too he was given the job of bowling at death, something which Bresnan has flopped recently in shorter formats.Like Aussies, Sammy too targeted Bresnan and scored 19 runs to secure a win by 5 wickets and one over which is comprehensive.

His batting though has to be appreciated in this series as he has scored more than some of England's specialist batters.

Pace bowlers have to learn to bowl yorkers.Even the newbie Suranga lakmal of Sri Lanka showed that approach and infact he bowled some dot ball yorkers against Pakistan in Asia cup.But then those bowlers having started international career years ahead of him do not have confidence that they can bowl yorkers.
